I have a Model 99 Z with LBC of 3F.

Does anyone know when this was manufactured and where I can get an owner's manual for it?

Unfortunate, there was no such model as a 99Z. With a LBC of 3F, it would have been made in 1954 which limits it to 2 models. The 99EG had a thin forearm with a schnabel tip, the 99R had a fat and wide forearm with a rounded end.

I will look again with a microscope, but it sure looked like a Z at the upper end of the lever next to the screw.

Ah, the Z-28. What a fine, fast car that was.

They didn't stamp the model letter on any of the 99's prior to 1960 - at least not where you can see it. That would just be an inspection stamp. A 99 from 1954 would have a serial number between 685,000 and 750,000 'ish.

The Model F was stamped for that model of 99 as you well know Rory. Gettin' old ain't for sissies.

Well, the barrel was stamped on the 99F but not the gun itself.

Well if a bbl is just a bbl, and a the receiver is just a receiver, then that is not a gun, correct?

Does it only become a gun when assembled?

Should we ask the ATF & E? I guess based on what they consider a gun, the receiver, you 're correct R. My mistake.

I have looked it over several more times and at the upper left of the receiver it clearly states "Savage Model 99", and directly below that is the letter "Z". The Z is a little crooked and some may say it's the number 2, but I don't think so.

It definitely has the thin forearm with the Schnable tip so it must be a 99EG, but you would sure think that "EG" would be where the "Z" is located.

That Z is an inspector's stamp, different inspectors had different stamps - some letters, some were just shapes.

From the mid-20's up through the 40's they often stamped the model on the front of the receiver under the forearm, but to the best of my knowledge they stopped doing that in the 50's.

It's an inspector's stamp, really. Nothing confounded about it. As Calhoun has posted pictures above, its one or the other. No model Z.

My serial number is 734169, which would fall into the category you mention.
It appears the "Z" is just an inspection mark, and I will give it no further consideration at this point.

My 99 looks just like your 1952 in the picture.

The 99EG is probably the most common model of 99 found. Introduced in 1935, they added checkering in 1939. It then remained pretty much unchanged until 1955'ish when they added factory drill and tap for scope bases, and was last made in 1959.

Classic 99, and they just plain work.
