My 270_280 post got me thinking. Excluding pistol and sub 22 calibers has there been any new calibers introduced since the .277? Captdavid

... Excluding pistol and sub 22 calibers has there been any new calibers introduced since the .277? captdavid- The 7.35x51 Carcano had a bore diameter of 0.290" and a groove diameter of about 0.301". Cartridge and rifles chambered for it were introduced about 1938, about 20 years after the .277. I have not been able to find any precedents for those bore dimensions. (Ever since JB/MD described the B-29 cartridge, I've wondered whether bullets pulled from old WWII surplus Carcano ammo would work in that cartridge.) --Bob

The .277" bullets were around for nearly two decades prior to the introduction of the .270. I believe Chinese Mausers were being rifled for .277" bullets prior to 1910. That 7.35 Carcano may be the only one introduced (other than the really little stuff) since the very early 1900's.

The .348 Win. in 1936 for the model 71. It was the only cartridge the 71 was chambered for. Except for some imported replicas, I believe the only factory rifles chambered for the .348 was the 71.

There were some who swayed bullets for .23 caliber wildcats.

Years ago I read somewhere that at the end of the chinese contract there were a lot of .277 bullets left over so Winchester decided to stuff them in an '06 case and see what happened.

I suppose there's room for a .29 and maybe a .23, but what's the point? I mean, other than selling new stuff? Aside from offering cartridges in shorter action lengths now and then, I just don't see the point.
