I recently picked up a LNIB Savage 16 lightweight Hunter in 243 from a fellow campfire member. Added a Weaver Kaspa 3-9x40 that was a takeoff from a new gun/scope combo.
The .243 shot MOA with the first load I tried. The gun is nice and light so I am already thinking of putting on a better "light" scope.
This gun will be for hunting predator's and a loaner for Texas Whitetails. So what scope are you using on your .243?

I have a Bushnell elite 3200 on top of my model 7. It works well and I have taken a few deer and smaller critters with it. I was planning on upgrading eventually.

I put a 4-12x40 VX-2 CDS on mine. Same scope tube as the 3-9x40, so not really that heavy. Great glass, can't complain. They go for about $250-$275 through a dealer on Ebay.

On one I have the Pentax clone of the Burris FF2 in 4.5-14x42 on the other a Vortex 4-12 both get used by my kids as Coyote / Deer target shooters. Both cheap Savages that shoot well and serve that truck gun purpose. The standard barrel shoots 100 grain Remington factory as well as the heavy barrel with hand loads both under an inch for 5 shot groups.
The 12-15 power seems about right for coyotes at longer distances.

An older 2-7 Leupold with the thin wire reticle in a set of Weaver bases and rings, perfect on a pre-64 FWT imho.

Bushnell Ultra HD 3-9x40 with the multi-x reticle. Have taken this one out to 1000 yards. Other one has an older Vari-X II 3-9 on it. Only Leupold I have.

Mine has a discontinued Kahles AH3-9x42 w/plex reticle on it. Rifle is a Left Hand Rem 700 CDL glass bedded into a McMillan hunter's edge stock. Originally setup for deer hunting southern whitetail but guess it would work fine for a walking varmint rig out west too. Love this rifle. It is scary accurate with Barnes 80gr T-TSX factory loads and also with 90gr Swift Scirocco II handloads. Just a pleasure to carry and shoot!

My 10 year old son's Remington 700 youth .243 currently has a 3-9x40 vortex - piece of junk. In the next short while it is getting replaced with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 (As soon as one on ebay is worth bidding on)

Pencil barrel Small ring Mauser Browning Safari. It wore a Leupold ultra light 3-9 EFR for a lot of years. A couple of years ago I switched that out for a 3-9'Bushnell Elite 4200. I had to go taller rings to clear the bolt, and I'm still not sure about that change. I needed the UL for a .22. I have since got a new UL (they now call them a .22 scope, but it is the same deal). It may go on the Safari.
Best,
Jack

I have a Leupold VX2 3-9X40 on mine.
You could shave a little weight with a 2-7 or a 6X. Or,since it will be used as a loaner, you could save a little money by getting a VX1.

Don't know why you need to upgrade. I have 2 Elite 3200 5X15's that are on 243's, and I don't see a need for anything else. Another 243 has a Weaver Classic 2X10.

Loving this combo for days when I'll be hunting the hardwood bottoms half the day and looking over a green field the other half. Took a dink with it yesterday actually (our season ends Feb 10)

since no one has mentioned it, bear in mind that the savage "short" action on the LWH really isnt that short, which will limit your mounting options. i have a 3-9x40 leupold on mine, which fits. however, the shorter leupold 2-7 fx2 6x, etc, options will not fit unless you have a one piece base or a rear that hangs over the action.

Just going through the same for my 243.
Mine will be on the heavier side, Savage LA with a Sendero profile 22". Before the new tube I had a 4-12x40 Vortex Diamondback that I sold. Now trying to decide on the SS 3-9x42 MQ or SS 10MQ, have both scopes ready to mount. Will mosrlty see range, so maybe the 10x?

Yup, great combo - the older version of the Mark AR aka Mark 2 has been perfect for this .243!

After ordering a new Leupold VX-2 2-7x33mm CDS this morning thinking I was done when a Kahles 2-7x33 with TDS appeared in the classifieds this afternoon. I always liked the Kahles TDS and did not hesitate so now that be my .243 scope.

Well unless you feel the need for more magnification which in a sporter type rifle I have found 9x to be a good all around scope. You are going to have a hard time beating the 11.5 oz your kaspa weighed. Remember extra magnification is a diminishing return. Theoretically at 600 yds 12x makes your target appear to be 50 yds away. At 9x it appears to be 65 yds away.not a lot of difference. At 15 x it will appear as o be 40 yds. Anyway if your kaspa suits you I'd just use it. If not a leupold would be fine and on a budget the weaver k6 classic I like. With light weight rings and a really light scope of around 9 oz you might save 4-5 oz.. I might also consider one of. Dougs minor close uts for $99 I don't have a rifle scope but have bought 2 Mnox binocs and a spotter and have been very happy .

I started out with a new VX-2 3-9 on my Hawkeye All Weather, but got suspicious of it while working up loads. Replaced it with the Bushy Trophy XLT 4-12 AO off my airgun. Still not sure what the issue was. The 3-9 is going on an FN .270 soon, which ought to settle that question.
What fresh Hell is this?

Currently a 2.5-8x36. Couple weeks ago was a Mark AR 3-9 mil/mil that I've taken out to 1200. Might be the SS 10x when summer gets here.

Thanks for not taking offense Jordan. None was meant.
I have a 6x40 Burris I can't learn to dislike. Tidy little thing. Nice #4 reticle and all but I am searching for an excuse to try a Tract these days.

I have a Bushnell elite 3200 on top of my model 7. It works well and I have taken a few deer and smaller critters with it. I was planning on upgrading eventually. Ditto. I mainly use it for predator calling (larger predators, usually at close range) but shoot deer with it now and then. The 3200 Elite in 2-7 has become my favorite scope.

Bought a Weatherby Mark V ultralight .243 from one of our .com friends. Its scope is a Bushnell 4200 4-16X40.

I only have one .243, a Browning BAR. It wears open sights.

Cabelas Euro 3-9x40 w/ EXT reticle. This is the re-branded Meopta scope. I really like the optics. The reticle is a little thin.

Leupold vx-1 3-9x40. My .243 {Tikka M595} gets used for deer in the fall and chucks in the summer. Scope seems completely adequate for both uses to me. Have killed chucks out to 360 yards with it and that's about as far as I'll ever get a shot opportunity here.

Have two .243 wins, varmint rig wears a VX2 4-12X. Works fine for chucks, but if only just on yotes, I'd swap to a 3-9X. [img:center] [/img] Deer .243 wears a 4X (#1 RSI)

Sorry to thread jack, but I have a question about that scope/reticle combo. I can't find anything from Cabelas on how to use that reticle. Is there a manual? If I buy one, it will go on a .270.

After starting this thread I found this Kahles 2-7x38 TDS here on in the classifieds. Today was the first range day and this is officially my favorite 2-7! Works great on my little Savage 16 LightweightHunter .243, now if I could figure out the drop using the TDS!
