I just picked up a sweet little 30-06 with a scope AND see-through scope mounts.
The rifle is already drilled & tapped for both front & rear sights, which I'm going to add on as soon as the parts come in.

At the rear I'm going with a complete Truglo set-up & a hooded ramp up front.

My question is this: What's the correct, or at least a serviceable, front bead height?
So far I've run across a .250, .260, .290, .310, .360, .375 & all the way up to a .450!!!

It's all very confusing, as none of my other Model 70s have iron sights on them for me to compare with.

Any suggestions?

Anyone know?
I could really use some help here --- this is the last part I need to order for the front sight.

I've already lined up spare screws, the hooded sight cover & ramp.

I have no idea about a model 75, but a model 70 used a 310. I am currently working on old model 70. I checked the book and pre 1940 guns used a different front sight but it too used a 310.

My apologies --- by '75 I meant a 1975 Model 70.
And THANK YOU for such detailed information.

It's a REALLY nice Model 70 --- the previous owner swapped out the hinged plate/trigger guard for the swing-out magazine & the bolt handle for stainless units.
(Trust me, it looks better than it sounds)

All of the checkering is still crisp & finely cut with no damaged lines in it at all.

As soon as my iron sights arrive & I get them mounted, I'll post up some pics.

In 1975, your rifle could have come with a .260 or a .310 height sight. It will depend on the caliber, barrel profile and which rear sight you have.

You could probably verify the correct height by eyeball bore-sighting your rifle. One is going to be way off of the target and the other is going to eyeball pretty close to dead on.

Good luck!

Thanks for such detailed input, Justin, I really appreciate it.

I have on order both a .290 & a .310 bead, which aren't that far off each other.

My reasoning for the .290 is because that's what is on my Model 94 lever rifle & it offers a pretty good sight picture.

I figured since the Model 10 & Model 94 both use the same ramp hood, I wouldn't be that far off.
