1) SPF "A River Running West: The Life of John Wesley Powell" by Donald Worster.

2) "The American West: A Twentieth Century History" by Michael Malone and Richard Etulain. Two prize-winning historians, one from Montana State, the other from NMU, provide a compact but comprehensive history of the first nine decades of the 20th century, from the end of the classic Wild West to the Reagan Revolution.
