The one you are getting likes 90 gr of fff Goex black powder and a great plains conical fired by a #11 CCI cap.
Hang on tight !

I use 90 grains of FFFG Goex, cci cap and a maxi ball. I've killed several deer with it.

Generally they have a 1/48 twist with shallower rifling. That design works with projectiles like the maxiball (on paper). Generally patched round ball works pretty well also, but loads maybe less than 80 grains would potentially be better than heavy loads. Plastic sabots tend to build up in the groves, but again there are many variables. So 50-80 grains 3F Goex, and patched ball or maxi would be good areas to test. Conicals are another slug to test with the same initial load constraints. But, everything is a guess until it works for you. Willaims or Lyman make a tang sight.

For a short while, I had a Renegade in .50 cal and it liked .490 Hornady Round Balls with .010 lubed Ox-Yoke patches over 75gr of 3f Goex. I used both RWS and the CCI #11 Magnum caps. I'm a big fan of the .54's so I traded the .50 off for another Renegade in .54. Here's a link for the patches. Buffalo Arms Co (BACO) is your friend when it comes to all things Black Powder. LINK Best wishes with your new toy! Ed

I bought one of the first 54 caliber Renegades back in the seventies. Got both the .535 round ball mould as well as a maxiball mould, 440 grain. First time out, at fifty yards, with 90 grains of FFg DuPont (yes, we had DuPont then), alternating between round ball and maxi, one damp, one dry patch beetween shots, produced a group that put all ten shots inside the nine ring on the NMLRA fifty yard pistol target. Only gun I ever had that shot two widely varying weight projectiles to the same point of impact. Pure coincidence, I think. Sold it like an idiot and bought a .58, and a .50. Neither performs like that .54.

That tang sight will cost you an arm and half your leg. A Williams open sight equipped with an aperature will be easier to get, cheaper, and work pretty much as well. I have used such a rig on a Browning Low Wall and was able to group just as well as with the tang sight included with that rifle.

This rig can also be made up without the fiber optics if you don't like those. I got the idea from the ebay guy and made up my own for the Low Wall. The same idea will also work on lever guns that aren't d&t'd.

I have a 50-cal Renegade since the early 90's. 80gr 3F shot everything with acceptable hunting accuracy, it seemed. My longest flintlock kill (I'm in PA, so my Renegade is a flint ignition) to date is with that rifle...90 yards, offhand.
