Thinking of trying a 300 SAUM. Is the round pretty much dead?

As long as you have, or can make, brass it isn't dead.
I load for the 256 Newton and nobody has made ammo or component brass for it since 1941/42. I've never fired a 256 Newton with the correct headstamp.

I see 300 SAUM brass for sale from Nosler and Norma at several online sellers quit a bit. I look for it as I feed two of them on a regular bases.
It is very easy to find good shooting loads for the 300 SAUM with all the bullets I have tried and cases last a long time if you do not abuse them badly.
PS I also see loaded ammo from Remington and Nosler.

Love mine. 4 mature whitetails out of my 2 300 saums this most recent deer season. Never had a problem getting nosler custom ammo (I don't reload). I keep ~300 once fired brass just in case and sell my excess

Nosler offers like ten factory loads for it... they must be onto something... I have a 300 RSAUM Ruger M77 Mark II walnut... got it years ago for a fire sale price on Gunbroker... $405. I like it a lot.

Shot in the dark here but... any chance one of you has a facotry core-lokt round for the 300 saum? Seems to be a hard one to come by and I am still needing one to complete a collection for a cartridge display I'm trying to make.
You'll shoot your eye out

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Dead? I don't think so. That being said, it will never gain any more momentum than it has had in the past. I have one in a Remington Model 7 stainless synthetic that I would be willing to part with. Shoot me a PM and we'll talk if you're interested.

Yea, its dead and so are all the other short mags save the 300 wsm. None of this bothers me. I just bought a Rem 700 TI in 300 RSAUM.

Seems to be a hard one to come by and I am still needing one to complete a collection for a cartridge display I'm trying to make. I have four boxes of those rounds that I got when I worked for Remingtom. I took them thinking that maybe I'd buy a .300 SAUM one day but never did. My gf has a hunting rifle chambered in .375 SAM (wildcat) and I use the .300 SAUM cases to make handloads for her once I've fireformed the brass. She doesn't need 80 rounds for that little beast so send me your mailing address via PM and I'll send a round or two out to you using UPS ground with the ORM-D sticker. I'll use the company account so it won't cost you a penny. Here's what I have. Here are the .375 SAM cases on the right formed from the .300 SAUM cases on the left.

What could be a sadder way to end a life than to die having never hunted with great dogs, good friends and your family?

I just bought a little Gay 270 WSM. I’m gonna put it next to my 300 ultra mag and see if it grows up to be straight 🌈🦄
