Hey guys, I'm looking at some left over stock on some LR rifles, choices are the calibers above. I will be elk and mule deer hunting out west, shots out to 500 yards, which calber would you pick and why. I'm going to top the rifle with a Nightforce NXS 3-15 MOAR. Thanks!

6.5 gets the nod on bullet choice however if I was going to be heavy on elk, I might try to look further to find a 7mm

Out to the 5, your choices don't have a whole lot of difference...especially with modern rangefinders...but the B/C difference between .264 and .277 really isn't even close.

I've killed a few elk with 6.5s, with the 140 AMAX in particular, but they've been pretty classic broadside shots. I'd imagine with a 6.5 LRX or other stout bullet, any angle on an elk wouldn't be an issue.

7lbs for the WSM and 7lbs 8 oz for the 6.5 (long action), I like the 6.5x284 but the WSM is a 1/2 lighter.

I would have gotten the 7mm RM but they are out of them! I waited too long, they did have them.

Your scope choice is going to add over 2# with rings which is not something you really need for 500 yds and in, you might want to look at a NF 2x10x42 compact unless you absolutely need the xtra magnification!

6.5 just because the brass is higher quality from lapua and the bullet selection is far more exciting.

That said a 150 LRAB at 3200 would burn everything in 500 down with authority. And Norma brass is a very close second in quality.

What Fred said.

What are the rifles? I'd be thinking in terms of long-term, rebuildable, quality "platform"... meaning an action and stock and trigger etc. worth rebarreling when the 6.5-284 is shot out. Which won't be too long. Remington M700 being the obvious choice.

LR shooting is seriously addictive and once you get rolling you'll be amazed how fast the round count stacks up... and 6.5-284 isn't known for long barrel life. At any rate, don't run max loads or you'll toast that thing FAST. Online, when I was researching 6.5's (I'm building a 6.5 SAUM, almost done) guys would talk about seeing accuracy start to fall off on the 6.5-284 in 600 rounds! You easily could do that in a couple MONTHS. My advice, for what it's worth, run moderate loads with a slow powder. Don't chase that last 150 fps.

You're gonna have a lot of fun. Great choice on the scope. Jealous. smile.

How many 6.5x284's have you shot out? Have you ever truly shot out a big game rifle barrel?

The 270 will most likely kick harder, I have a 270 WSM, never fired a 6.5-284. There is also the 6.5-06.

Two with one currently at about 450 rounds. Each made it to about 1500 rounds before the fall, one was a feather weigh and could not be set back. the other set back for another 500 could have went longer but lucked into a benchmark 1-8 t. All were on a hunting rifle.

Get the WSM. The recoil is nothing. My 300 WSM has little recoil with a 165 grain bullet. You really couldn't go wrong with either one.

Unless you can get a custom twist (not really needed at 500 yds), LR .277 bullet options are pretty much only the new Berger offering. Tons out there for the 6.5.

Actually, two. Not sure that I would classify it has shooting out a big game rifle barrel, but they sure knocked the snot outta PDs at extended range.

FWIW, and in all fairness, I'd say that 1/3 of the barrel life in my 6.5x284s was consumed in developing/tweaking loads.

I could never get consistent accuracy MRC 6.5 X 284 set it back once recrowned then gave up and rebarreled. 2 nd barrel was ok. But still had consistency issues lots of money just my opinion but my experience could not get above 2800 FPS with 140 gr good accuracy. Very fussy in my opinion.

6.5 CM much easier to find a good load, and barrel life!

If I were starting from scratch, the 7WSM would fit this bill nicely. It's only issue is brass availability and it splits the space nicely between the 6.5 and 300.
