I recently acquired a rather unusual Marlin 39D with a STRAIGHT TANG---serial number 71-71836. I think that I may have swerved into a one of a kind or a special order. Any one have a comment on the possibility of this model being made either as a special order or a mistake. I can't find any info to suggest it was a standard issue or an option. The rifle is lightly used and in near perfect condition with a couple minor scratches on the mag tube and some shine on the sides of the hammer. Everything is consistent with the 39D except the straight tang. I know a lot of you have a lot more insight and experience with these CLASSIC rifles than myself. If I could figure how to post pictures I would.

Thanks for your reply. Nice looking Mountie. Actually have 2 39d's---one is of 1973 manufacture(serial# 73 120539) It is 100% correct. And the one in question is from the 1971 batch (ser.#71 71836) the two are virtually identical except for the Tang. Lighter profile barrel/carbine type forestock w/barrel band. Neither one appears to have been molested/smithed at all-- virtually new condition. I dont believe the lower reciever or the stock has been altered or changed in any way. Just disassembled the reciever and the serial number on the tang side matches the number on the other side. I think it came from the factory as a straight tang 39D. Thinking it must have been a special order or an anomaly of some sort. Dont think many of them exist in this form. If anyone can give me some hints on how to post pictures I would post a few.

Sounds like an interesting rifle... The D is the only one of the 39 series I have not owned because I don't care for pistol grip stocks on leverguns...

So the gun is question has a 20" barrel with a dovetail front sight like the Carbine, full length magazine tube but instead of a pistol grip stock and lever it is straight like a Mountie or Carbine.

Nice...Bob

Yes Bob all of the features of the normal 39d but a straight tang rather than the normal pistol grip. I have been trying to get some pics up and am having zero luck. PH
