I want a silencer on my hunting rifle(s). Trouble is, all the barrels are too small for 5/8" threads. 1/2" threads will work on at least most. Any reason it wouldn't work to do that? I'm thinking about things like the strength of 1/2" threads for a 30-cal can, and so forth.

Any of you put 'full-size' silencers on small threads? Any of you put them on your Rugers, Winchesters, Brownings, Sako/Tikkas, etc?

P.S. Although the easy 'fix' is to get something like a Ruger American Predator, I strongly dislike most or all rifles in that general class, either because of the stocks, the general feel of them, or specific issues I've experienced with them.

^ that.

1/2" for 308 is getting pretty skinny. There are examples around tho, so it has been done.

The only problem is not having enough shoulder for your suppressor to mount against. It can be done and I have one that was threaded.

I have used a thread adapter to "bush up" a skinny AR 5.56 barrel to 5/8" for use with full size 30 caliber can on an AR. No negative issues. But, no experience with doing same on a skinny 30 caliber barrel.

Bushing up would work, I think. I'll look around at options for that. Thanks.

.635" OD barrel
.300 WSM
threaded 1-2x28
Gemtech 1/2x28 - 5/8x24 adapter
Harvester Suppressor threaded for 5/8x24
This rifle shoots extremely well for a light Suppressed hunting rig.

Note the added "shoulder" the adapter gives... I feel this is the best way to go when fitting a Suppressor to a hunting weight rifle barrel. It also works very well on the .223s threaded 1/2x28, both bolt and gas guns.

What Dogshooter said.

I use those on my 223 rifles when using my 7.62 can.

I think the bigger problem is the wall thickness and the belling of the muzzle that can happen.

1/2x28 would have a minor diameter of 0.4562

0.4562 - .308 = .1482 /2 = .0741 wall thickness. That's pretty thin.

I guess you never said what caliber your going to be using it on. That matters and I assumed a 30cal.

Either 1/2x28 and use an assortment of adapeters

Or if you don't have enought girth play kimber and go 7/16x28 and buy one of kimbers thread adapters.

I actually do hear the shot, and mostly I hear the ringing for quite a considerable period thereafter. Plus, it helps the kids.
