Thinking of joining the brotherhood.

Held a model 71 for the 1st time yesterday & 'kinda liked it. Mine was a fairly clean 24" rifle version from 1948, asking price a lofty $1775.00

Took some pics, this one has a Winchester red recoil pad on it, looks factory install, also a finger adjustable peep sight with no markings save a small #56 on the top.

Here's the images, thoughts on making a lower offer?

Just my opinion but I'm uncertain about the recoil pad being a factory install. Still if you could get that gun for $1500.00 that would be a good deal. I've seen asking prices (asking) up here in New England between $2500.00 and $3000.00. They are nice rifles.

Bradburys Sporting Goods Grants Pass Oregon has a model 71 for sale about $1200 IIRC. Would be worth checking out.

That is a deluxe model and is priced well IMO.

Local shop has a Win 71 in the 53000 serial number range. About 80% condition. Checkering on the grip. They want $1200.

The pad is an add on. If the original butt plate was still there the rifle would be priced higher.

$1775 for a safe queen seems a lot but it'll never lose its value. I have several that I take out to clean n admire every so often. First one I saw I knew I had to have it. A scratch I had to itch. Make the lower offer then take the counteroffer.

It's priced at $950 now. Pretty darn nice rifle but with a pad.

Less is always better, but unless that one has a bad bore for some reason I'd get it. Check for bore condition and watch for a ring in the bore. Got bit by that once and have caught several since. Most sellers are not even aware when that happens.

A good shooter goes for $900 to $1200. A 90% gun $1500 and a Deluxe in real nice shape $3500...A long tang adds about $200 to each.

The pre-War Model 71 long tang Deluxe Models fetch a premium. They are worth considerably more to collectors.
The early Deluxe Models also featured the Win 98A peep
sight integral to the bolt. These rifles were rare as the
transition began to the later 71s about SN 16000.
$3500 plus for those in excellent original condition
with sling and bolt peep-no recoil pad unless the period
1922 patent Winchester solid version.Later postwar 71s will not fetch the prices the earlier long tang Deluxes will.
But there are always those who don't know the difference.

For rarity-try a pre-War 71 Deluxe in 450 Fuller/Alaskan with the JKR (Johnson Kenai Rifles) marking. $4500-$5000

450, so the 1922 patent recoil pad on this 71 could be factory installed?

That recoil pad is definitely an add on: not original. Even a blind squirrel can find that nut. It's a nice rifle, but not a collectors piece. If I really wanted the rifle (considering it's a "shooter grade"), I'd be negotiating with the seller and trying to get him to lower the price. I'd be thinking more along the lines of starting an offer of about $1,350.00 and working up to no more than $1,400.00... JMHO..

that's a deluxe with bolt peep in relatively nice condition. Yeah, the pad is added, but you will appreciate it. If original steel butt plate, the price would be close to double that. I think it is priced fairly, and if you like it, buy it.
