It's time for a new boat. I've had my 14' Lund for 25 years. I've put a ton of fish in that boat over the last 2 1/2 decades, but it's time for somehting bigger and more comfortable. Total budget's about $3500.00.

I want a 16-18 foot deep V with a walk through windshield. I've found three different late 70's vintage Sylvan's I'm looking at. So far, the one I'm most interested in is a 16' 1977 with a 75 h.p. Johnson Stinger, trim and tilt, Minn Kota trolling motor, depth finder, and a convertible top, as well as rod lockers and an aerated livewell. He's asking $2500.00 for it. I haven't gone and looked at it yet. Talked to the guy once. He said it needs the hood replaced on the motor, (a branch fell on it and cracked it) new batteries (I have one from my other boat) and the running lights need re-done. That's a cheap fix, and easy enough for a hack like me. Hoping to go take a look at it next week. From looking around, that price seems fair, and he says "make an offer" so I'm hoping to knock it down.

Does this seem like a fair price ?

Well gunner, "The difference between men, and boys, is the price of their toys."

I'd say if you like it, buy it.

Price a motor hood. Those boogers can be very expensive around these parts.

That's good to know. I do have a big outboard motor junkyard close by. If anyone's got one they should have it. (Twin Cities Outboard, in case anyone's looking for used or new parts.)

Priced a hood. 100-125 for nicer ones. Scratched up ones are less. I have to admit I was surprised they were that much.

If you can find one that cheap jump right on it.
Just last week I paid $300 plus tax for one for my 90 hp Yamaha 2 stroke here in the boating capitol of the U S.

Make sure you check the floor on that age boat, when I was shopping for a similar boat, most I looked at were rotted. I had a 16' Starcraft with that same motor several years back. It ran pretty good but, despite a tune-up by an OMC mech, never could go from idle to full throttle without feathering it. Hard to pop a skier up like that if you have that activity in mind too. I had to replace the floor on that boat also.

and the transom and along the keel. look for any amateur repairs
such as paint brush marks. there's a gazzillion out there for
sale, so don't be afraid to walk. and look to make sure it "pees" good

Good advice, and thanks guys. I've got three more to look at if this one is too far gone.

Well, I bought the boat today. Can't wait to start tinkering with it.
