We have about 10 crab apple trees to remove from a road right away and wondered if I could salvage the trunks & larger sticks for people that smoke meat and fish.

What would be a reasonable price for stick up to 6 inch-ish diameter at the base and roughly 10 foot long?

What lengths would you cut it to?

humdinger, have no idea. But, suggest you take some pics and test on craigslist.

Just keep running separate ads until you find the sweet spot. I've done that with semi-rare/semi-expensive plants I grow here.

Compared to Home Depot and the nurseries, I practically give them away and still catch a few $$$'s.

Good luck.

Good idea.

I may price compare wood chips by the pound and weigh out sticks and set a fair price.

My only fear about CL is there are some "use local wood only" laws here based on emerald ash borer transport, but this is apple wood.

I'd buy some from you, if you were local. Apple wood is my favorite for smoking.

I pretty much use apple exclusively for my smoke. I have a friend with a bunch of apple trees that keeps me well supplied.

Nice to see it is popular.

How should a person prep the wood for sale?

Small blocks?
Split?

I live in a metro area so I cant sell in too large of sticks because many people dont own chain saws or pickups.

Since you live in a metro area, I would say split if it's not too much trouble for you to do it. Otherwise, leave it to them to figure it out.

Most folks in those confines have probably never seen an axe, except in a horror movie. grin

Splitting is a compromise and wouldn't take much time.

I put a post on a local facebook hunting group to test the market and it seems like they expect debarked, chipped, and packaged... jeez.

My grandpa just used blocks.

meh...just sell it in whatever fashion is good for you.

My only suggestion would be baseball sized chunks. That's what the majority of cookers want.

In fact, I bet you could sell a bunch right in our very own classifieds and advertising is free. All it takes is to be a quality product like Danny's Maple Syrup and folks jump all over it. Maybe an okay from Rick.

I'd take a 20-50 lb sack myself and I know 3-5 other cookers who would do the same.

I should get anyone in central NY in contact with my best friend from high school. He helps his dad run 3000 apple trees.

I smoke a whole lotta salmon with apple and cherry

My grandfather used it for his fish smokers and its the local wood in cold MN growing conditions.

Update:
I talked to a game warden at a sports show about firewood transport because we have a real issue with emerald ash boarer and they are cracking down on moving firewood.

She said it applied to all firewood. I assume thats the company line because regulating all firewood in MN has to be tough.

So if I do this:
Wood comes back in my pickup with a topper...
And I sell it via word of mouth and not craigslist

or just say screw it and stock pile it for friends as Ive done in the past.

I never of using crabb apple?? We all down here use pecan, oak, hickory and mesquite. Hickory is great in a smokehouse cause it makes very little soot.

Anyone out there using hazelnut?
Cleaning the dead stems out and just wondering if it were usable?

If not I will just trim a green Hickory limb off and use it!
