Another way to think about these numbers....

Spend $100/second and it'll take close to 3 hours to spend $1 million

- at that rate it takes almost 4 months to spend $1 billion

It would take about 4 lifetimes to spend $1 trillion

A good example of how Debt nullifies freedom.

That is what we the people owe through the Gov't but that is not the only debt that is owed there is much more than that in under funded pensions etc around the country. Our recent past Pres. seen to that as he did Sorous' (sp) bidding. Cheers NC

It's strictly fictional, since that represents, at current valuations, more real wealth than actually exists in the world, so it could only ever be actually paid off by devaluing the currency by many fold, such that it would take hundreds of thousands of dollars to go grocery shopping for your family every week.

The whole purpose of the debt-based economy concept is to be a mechanism for systematically transferring all real wealth, over time, from regular folks to the international banks and their toadies. It does a very good job of this.

Some truth there 20 trillion is on the light side of reporting our debt obligations

Have to agree it's apt not to end well

Nothing like dying and leaving your kids so far in debt they'll never dig out.

I doubt it'll last that long before someone hits the RESET button.

Right. In fact in the ancient world there was a universal law that debts can only last a few generations, then disappear. The effect was to disincentivize large loans anywhere near the year where all debts are forgiven by law. There are obvious drawbacks to this approach, but avoidance of perpetually building debt, both national and private (which ultimately leads to collapse), would seem to be worth those drawbacks.

Now for the rest of the story.....that $20T national debt does not include the present value of the unfunded liabilities for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Those three add someplace between another $40T to $80T.

What could possibly go wrong?

More good news

..add to that debt owed by businesses and banks etc , then calculate the percent of GDP that debt equals.

And you forgot student debt. It's right now higher than housing debt was in 2007 and the default rate is already higher.

Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

..............Other examples of 20 trillion....200 billion $100 bills.....20 trillion gallons of water = 18.1646 cubic miles of water weighing 83 billion tons.....20 trillion miles = 3.40965 light years....20 trillion inches = 315,656,565.656 miles (about 12,626.26 trips around the earth's equator).... 20 trillion droplets of tap water fills one square mile about 9.5 feet deep.....20 trillion seconds = 634,195.8396 years......

Total unfunded liabilities for this country well exceed $200 trillion. Everything above times more than ten.

Rong. Make that $120-160 trillion.
