Your gun was produced in 1981 according to the serial number. The 99C's had the fat forearm for a few years starting in 1981, it was carried over from the 99CD which was produced from 1975 to 1980. I attached a photo of the front of my book which has a 99C like yours on the cover. If you really want to get addicted to 99's buy my book or Doug Murrays. There is a link below to get my info. David

Thanks for the response and info David... personal email sent to you.
Two quick questions for anyone. My 99c doesn't have a Monte Carlo stock, so no recoil pad. I'm considering mounting one but wonder about the wisdom of it. Also where would I look for an exact Savage butt pad, or just go for an aftermarket version?
Also, how do I post photos like Jeff and David did above. I was able to post an attachment link for one photo but had to resize it, and I couldn't add any more to the post.
Thanks guys...really enjoying this website and forums.

The 1981 99C was "supposed" to have a Monte Carlo buttstock with the thin recoil pad like my rifle. Maybe you have a transition rifle. Don't modify it! I'd like to see photos. You can post photos through photobucket.com. There may be a sticky telling you how or maybe one of the more internet savvy guys can help you. I'll check my email. David

Okay, so I've uploaded some photos of my 99C into Photobucket and hopefully I can figure out how to load them here:

I don't think I've done it. Maybe someone there can advise me?

That's interesting. The stocks were impressed checkering through 1980. Your stock has the same checkering as my 1981 vintage 99C but no Monte Carlo buttstock. Oops, I made a mistake, my 99C is 1982 production. Maybe that's the reason for the differences. I just checked the 1981 catalog, the 99C is shown with a Monte Carlo buttstock. You might pull the buttplate and forearm and see if the assembly codes on them match. They are a combination of numbers and letters. The code is also stamped on the left side of the lower tang. That requires removing the buttstock. David

Just FYI I checked the assembly codes on the buttstock and lower tang...they match...DS 16. Not sure about the forend. There is a faint stamping on the round knub where it indexes into the receiver but unreadable. Looks like it's been painted over. Could be 16. Any way the concern is with the buttstock and that matches.
Thanks Dave for your feedback. There's an envelope on the way to you.

Sounds like you have a rare variation there. Will send your book out as soon as I get the check. David
