I finally have to face the fact that I can't see open sights well enough to hit much any more. I've had a scope or a red dot on my Marlin 1894 in the past and added a Ruger cheek piece to raise the comb. It worked, but I didn't really like the looks. Any recommendations for something different? What have you done? Or do you just raise your cheek off the stock to see through the scope?

Good cheek weld is important.

I've done it two ways. One was to cut the top of the comb on a table saw, glue a piece of wood, shape to fit, then paint.

Another, is to get a stick on pad from Brownells.

You could put some closed cell foam padding under a stretchy cartridge carrier for a lightweight lift. I've seen the leather buttstock covers on eBay, butt not sure how much they'd help.

A nice bonus on the Marlin .45 Colt, I can work the hammer without an extension. The high comb was needed for the Bushnell Holosight. When I converted to scope, I used high rings, as I didn't want to remove the leather comb.

This is not pretty, but works well on 'dillers at twilight. By leaving the comb in place, I can swap back and forth.

This works well enough for me. You don't know the dot is there and it rides low. I also like being able to wrap my fingers around the receiver when carrying.

The leather gives just enough. YMMV

I like the look of the leather cheek piece. Somewhere, I've seen them advertised in various thicknesses.

Today, I put the TRS 25 red dot back on. It's not bad with the existing comb height and as Steelhead said, you can still carry it in with one hand wrapped around the receiver. Plus, no hammer extension needed. I'll sight in tomorrow if the wind isn't too bad.

Thanks for all the ideas. Getting old isn't for sissies but it beats the alternative.

Using weaver style 2 piece bases and Burris Low rings gets a scope as low as I have been able to. I have them on my 444 with a 1 x 4 Leupold and it is low enough to work well.
Good Luck,

Mine came from Cabelas. They had three different thickness models. These are lace on type. Dale

For me, I like the leather lace up bit.

Dat's UGLY...

It makes my efforts look better... wink

And, a case could be made for mine being pretty homely.

A scout scope sits exceptionally low and does not impede access to ones action.

From memory it's an XS rail, Weaver rings, Leupold scope.

Looks about as goofy as Herman Munster riding a tricycle.
