David Petzal of Field and Stream says the 6.5-300 is probably the best round Weatherby has ever come up with for reaching out a ways and touching something without being mauled by recoil. I kinda like it too on paper. Anybody have real world experience with this cartridge? I just get F and S to read Petzal. I like his grumpy point of view.

I do not have experience with the 6.5-300, but he is probably right within the context of the Weatherby paradigm.

The ultra-velocity mindset that Roy brought to the table has become outdated due to two technological advances: better bullets and laser rangefinders. His fast rounds allegedly were great killers because of hydrostatic shock, something that has been both debunked but also replaced by controlled expansion/deeper penetrating bullets.

The speed also flattened the trajectory and made holdovers easier. But rangefinders and turreted scopes have made speed less central to long range shooting success.

So the 6.5-300 overbore express continues the Weatherby mindset, but it does not offer the advantages it would have had it been introduced 45 years ago.

It was invented in the form of the Weatherby/Wright/Hoyer about 50 years ago...

I wonder how much fire comes out of the end of the barrel in the dark. If you don't hit it, you might burn it.

May not need to cook it - just shoot and eat.

Weatherby necked up and down a lot of their cartridge cases way before release dates. They have a history of releasing cartridges after the bug bites the market and the interest is already there.
No surprise with this one either.

The 6.5mm has better long range bullets BC wise.

I'd rather go 26 Nosler if I was in the market.

They keep reinventing the wheel. If you know your rifle and the range a few inches in trajectory makes little difference. My son is a U.S. Army sniper. Still mostly use 308. 175gr.

It is without a doubt the best at burning out barrels.

6.5-300 appears to edge the 26 Nosler by 50 to 75 fps which ain't a thing. Either would be nice additions to the stable, in the right blueprint.
