John, that ought to take care of a few sage rates...

4000 with 40's is pretty easy with several powders in the .223 from 26-inch barrels. TAC will do it as well, as I found when attempting to find out just what the .223 AI gains over the standard round when loaded to "tight primer pocket" pressures. In fact as I recall, in the 26" barreled rifle I used (a varmint-weight Remington 700) the top velocity was around 4050 fps with the standard .223 case.

One of the reasons for all this is the standard SAAMI pressure for the .223 is 55,000 PSI, and primer pockets often don't loosen up until pressures are over 70,000 PSI, which of course depends on the particular brand/lot of brass.

J.B. I was hoping you'd weigh in...

actually this was using Remington cases.... and Federal also... although Federal requires 2 less grains...

I also did some testing with 35 grain NTX Hornadys and 35 grain lead free Noslers.....

they were clocking at about 4450 or so...

Allen, if the price wasn't as much higher than it is... ( I get good deals in bulk on the other bullets)... their accuracy alone would have me using them exclusively...

I shoot a lot each season... 5 to 8000 rounds of 223 or so....

but those lead free are sweet for accuracy, performance "on game".. and I love how the 35 grain Lead free are as long as the 50 grain non lead free, and the 40s are the size of the 55 grainers...

they aren't these short things like the 35 grain V Max...which has the BC of a pingpong ball...

Dang, zipping right along, looks like fun, I don't have a 223 bolt gun, all mine are AR SD guns loaded with 55 gr TSX's and 64 gr Noslers.

actually Roy, I did work up a load in the 22.250 using 35grain Lead Free Plastic tip bullets....that chronographed at 4750 fps....

would that work out instead?

Did once chronograph some 30 grain Bergers...those broke 5K fps... not by much...but did surpass the mythical 5000 fps...

but who knows, might have been a fluke...

when I tried it, I only had a few left and the brass used was brass that expendable, just about worn out...
