Hello. I'm pretty new here,1st post on the predator forum. Question. I would like to load up some solids-non expanding bullets to take a few to Africa with me. Like 10 or so just for a jackal or caracal or whatever. I got plenty of 375s,not a issue, but a little overkill. I want to do some light loads in a 257 Weatherby Mag or maybe 7x57. Where would I look to get solid non expanding pelt saving bullets in calibers like that. Maybe 243 as well. Thank you.

Not sure about where to get non expanding solids, but, anything as fast as a 243+ is going to risk tumbling. That can also cause significant damage.

A dude I know suggested to just turn a soft point backwards and single load them in the rifle. Of course on a lite load. I am Leary of that advice.

I would be too, but it's your gun/face...

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Most of the time solids will just pin hole in and out. Coyotes often don't even act hit. They may run quite a ways before piling up. I would advise against them, as you will likely be disappointed. An expanding bullet won't leave too big of a hole and your critter will be dead right there close.

Shooting something like a 7X57 with standard loads isn't going to destroy your pelts.

I am not sure I understand the damage to the pelts you refer to. I hunt coyotes with a 22-250 using ballistic tips and get pretty close to top dollar for the hides after a little sewing. If you are concerned about taxidermy my suggestion is going to be stick with the Nosler ballistic tip or Barnes ttsx and you will be fine. The comments about the solid not putting the game down is correct.

Try finding some Barnes Banded solids. They used to be made in some smaller calibers like .308 etc. Currently only 9.3 and up. Probably some still around at stores if you look.

Have you thought about cast bullets? In the 1970's when fox were worth $100. each I used 170gr Flat Nose (Lee Mold)in my Sav. 99 in 300 Sav. They worked very well but weren't a long range load.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska
