...factory customer service reps were posting here. laugh

.... and knew what actually happened with their new rifles at public ranges.

"You know, you'll likely get better groups if you rest the forearm on the (new) bag rather than the barrel. Yeah, I realize you feel more comfortable shooting crouched real low, but..."

"I know 'going prone' seems like a good way to get a solid rest, but the reason your bullets are key-holing in your target - which is 15 yards away- is because your barrel is so close to the ground that many of your bullets are skipping into the target. (Your 'expert' buddy who is teaching you to shoot your new rifle should be pointing that out rather than exclaiming about the powerful muzzle blast of your new 223.)

"It's true, the 380 the 'friend' from work sold you is not a precision long-range pistol."

"No, a $3000 scope will not make you or your rifle shoot 10X better than the $300 scope (which you're getting consistent 3-4 MOA groups with.)"

You could probably see the target a lot better if your "expert gunsmith" friend had not mounted the scope backwards.

The 25-06 Rem 7600 will shoot better if you son's cheek is touching the stock, not moving back and away when he pulls the trigger.

Worst flinch I ever saw. The kid moved like a boxer avoiding a punch, then slapped the trigger.

Dad's head was stuck in the spotting scope and adjusting the sights with every shot.

"Oops now it's low and left"

Don't see it so much now, seems everybody's got optics, but back in the day it was common to see people with that back sight raised as high as it would go and the damn rifle was still hitting high.

I know there are folks who contact the factories because their new rifle isn't shooting as well as they can, but I'll bet they are actually a small fraction of the total. It must require a high degree of patience to suffer the many fools.

A day at the public range can be enlightening in that regard.

We build 1/2 M.O.A. rifles - unfortunately they are often owned by 3 M.O.A. shooters.

223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.

I much prefer to share the range with the $10,000 shooters sporting $1000 rifles, then to be around the $999 shooters and their $10,000 gear (which they're often not the least bit bashful to mention.)

Way more people staring at their target and glaring at their gear than looking at several very pleasing groups on a target and wondering if they need to make a minor adjustment just to please themselves.

'..something is wrong with the chronograph.... all the numbers were different, and I shot out of the same box...'

honest, that one is a true quote!

ME: 'might I suggest a cartridge with a little more oomph if your thinking about an elk hunt'

HIM: '...it's a bottleneck cartridge...'

Which is true, the 7.62X39 IS a bottleneck cartridge!?!?!?!

ME: 'maybe a little better scope'!?!?!?

HIM: '...it cost over $100...'

Me: Your shots are all over the target, I can't tell you which way you need to adjust your scope.

Him: They should all be close together, I am shooting at the hole the last bullet made.

I witnessed a similar event at a public site in day at a private range. Guy had his 600 yard elk gun a 7mm mag and was trying to site it in. Seemed to be having problems. I watched him carefully and with each trigger pull (literally) he would close his eyes and move his face off the stock. After firing almost 20 rounds he hit a 3" bull and called it sited in. The rest formed about an 18" pattern with non close to one another.

I watched 2 somewhat older guys trying to get a Remington 700 varmint rifle in .308 on paper at 25 yards for half an hour. Turns out the gunshops son had mounted the scope 180 degrees off. They had the caps off and up down became left right, etc. Once I looked at it, remounted it for them it shot perfect groups once sighted in ( I did that to, they were spent from before).
