....still works!!

I shot this gobbler Monday morning at 8:25

Call: discontinued Primos Alumislate, Hunters Specialties Rosewood striker

Ammo: discontinued Federal Premium High Energy Turkey shells, 3", 1-3/4oz of #5 shot, box says "MUZ VEL 1300 fps"

Decoy: an old Feather Flex collapsible hen from around 2002

Shotgun: Winchester 1300, 12ga, uses 2-3/4 or 3 inch shells, factory WinChoke. I bought this on sale at BPS around 2001 for about $225, on sale, after turkey season was over.

I was in some swampy hardwood bottomland and this bird was evidently alone. I delivered 1-3/4 oz of #5 shot in his face at 13 paces. He took about 10 minutes to come in from the far brushline about 60 yards away. He took his time spitting and drumming the whole way, he put on a great show.

What a beautiful bird! Congratulations. After seeing this I'm tempted to throw away all my new stuff. Well.... For the first time in years I have no new equipment. The Dennis Kirk box call I bought about 1980 will be my primary call. It's sure called a truckload of birds.

Glad to see you using "Old equipment." What works, works.

Thanks for the post.
Jim

Nice hooks!

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Congrats on a fine tom.

I love my old 1300s. My new SXP is just like them guts wise, but that Inv+ bore sure does pattern well.

Nice beard, nice spurs, nice bird. Nothing wrong with using old things.

This one didn't weigh as much as I thought it would. It felt heavy, but three times on the bathroom scales with and without holding it I could only squeeze 18 honest pounds out of it! LoL! But it's more than enough breast meat for some good eating later on.

I've always wanted to bag a 25# or heavier fat tom. They're out there...

I've smacked a few that I swore were 25# that werent't. Then last year I shot one that was big but didn't seem all that heavy. It was 24.5# I think. I was shocked.

My sbe 2 is discontinued now isn't it?? Lol
I had a 1300 for my first turkey gun. Killed my first 10 birds with it. Still in my safe but retired as my best friend( who gave it to me) died when we turned 18. Saving it for his nephew and don't want it beat up

I have some new equipment and some vintage. My vest is new this year. Don't have a box call newer than 16 years old. Guess I don't much pay attention or care if it's discontinued as long as it is rugged and works

I prefer hevi shot but killed a truck load with lead too over the years . Helps but isn't absolutely necessary

My Lynch box call is about 50 years old, my turkey ammo is all lead, my favorite shotgun about 50 years old! But I was old when you started to hunt๐Ÿ˜ Amazing how time has passed.. But the hunt is still the thing, glad to see things are being passed on.. My old pal bought several of those 1300's when they hit the market! I remember it well, new stuff then๐Ÿ˜‚ Great post, but reminds me how old I really am๐Ÿ˜
