i've been wanting to buy a 22-250 for targets and varmints, as well as deer (with appropriate bullets) for my grandson. On something of a foolish impulse I bought a used customized Browning Safari with a heavy barrel. Love the cartridge, dislike the bull barrel, so planning to sell it and replace it with more of a "standard" weight.
I have about a dozen rifles of various makes and have reloaded for 35 years. but I'm a bit stuck making this decision. don't want to spend premium money, prefer under $750 sans scope, on this one. Like pre-T3 Tikkas in that range but not keen on their 1:14 twist for using 60+ grain deer bullets, nor newer model Tikkas.

thoughts/recommendations?

Not particularly. None of the rifles I like come with anything but a 1-14" twist in .22-250. You might look at Savage. I don't want one but I think they do offer a 1-12" twist. G'luck ...

Look at Hunting Rifles Forum...A member here has organized a Tikka .22-250 with a 1 in 8 twist at a price under your budget, just for 24HCF members.

That would be hard to beat.

My 8 twist .22-250 Shilen/Mohawk loves 75's and 80's, actually groups 80's slightly tighter than 75's.

8 twist will handle about any bullet you want to feed it, from varmints to WT's and hogs.

I recently bought a T/C venture in .22-250 primarily for chucks but I intend to whack some deer with it too. Right now it's shooting in the .5 - .75" range at 100 yards with factory loads and I didn't do a thing to it but adjust the trigger, mount a scope and shoot. It has a 1-12" twist barrel and I've ordered 60 gr. Nosler partitions, 64 gr. Nosler bonded solid base and 64 gr. Winchester power points for deer. I reckon I should be able to get one or the other of those to shoot good enough to whack bambi with this fall.

63 Sierra for everything, and it will shoot great in a 1-14".

Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.

The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.

Don't overthink it, just go kill stuff with whatever bullet shoots in your rifle. Deer die easy.

The Ruger American Rifle in 22-250 comes with a 1-10" twist barrel.

Does the 65gr Sierra work in standard 12 or 14 twist 22-250s? I know they recommend no slower than 10. My 9 twist 22-250 loves them. I've got a Swift wildcat with a 12 twist that I've never bothered to try them in because I figured they wouldn't stabilize.

If they don't work, the Sierra 63SMP will work, and its a good deer bullet...

That 63 gr Sierra SMP does shoot good out of my 14 twist 220 Swift, first barrel and second barrel. The Nosler 60 gr Partition will stabilize only under certain weather conditions. The Nosler 64 gr BSB won't quite stabilize. The 65 gr Sierra GK will not even come close to stabilizing, darn it.

I have a fondness for short barreled 220's (20 inch), so it may be that the bullets that would not quite stabilize just might stabilize out of a 26 inch barrel if pushed hard. Forget using the 65 gr Sierra in that twist.

As for a rifle, find a used Ruger 77 Ultralight and rebarrel it with a 20 incher in 8 twist and you'll have a happy kid. Heck, that rifle would make me happy too.

I'd buy whatever 22-250 you like and load up an appropriate bullet.
