Bearr264,

Your are correct in your observations. This is a youth model gun.

I bought it with the intentions of using it for young hunters and for my wife to use. A bud of mine had a full size ADL stock with the steel etchnon (for front action screw) lying around so I bolted it up for breakin. The rest is history.

By the way, this rifle will shoot Remingtons plain ole 140gr. core lock into a 1/2" consistantly.

The rifle sports a 2X7 VXII scope with 4A premier reticle in Burris Signature Rings and leupold QWR bases. Other than taking the time to break in the barrel and adjusting the trigger to 3lbs thats all that has been done to it.

I really love the handling and pointing characterists of the shorter barrel. It balances very well, with the factory contour barrel giving it some weight out front.

I took two hogs with it this year using the 120gr. Nosler BT. Again this bullet is not "suppose" to work well. The hogs were 95 and 190lbs at sixty and 75 yards. As you know hogs are almost always a moving target and the shorter barrel was definately a plus. I beleive the fast handling of the rifle was a major factor in taking the second hog.

Someone once said "only accurate rifles are interesting". This one is a very interesting rifle. Even if the barrel is 20" and I have no idea of the velocity.

It works! GB

Don't slight the Core-Lokt,they have offered exceptional accuracy in every weight and diameter I have tried. They remain a mainstay, for much of my practice in many chamberings.................

To add a few more cents...

Many (not all... nb!) Ackley shooter's I've known have more unfounded confidence in rifle's so-reamed than any other definable group of shooter's I've yet to meet including "7 em-em" owners. Typically their "awesome ballistic achievement's" seem to come from longer barrels and excessive powder charges. Using a 7mm example, it's no trick to get 3,200 (+) fps from a 280 Rem stoked with 140's in a 22" bbl., but still there seem to be no end to adherant's of The Cult of Ackley nor the needless gyration's they'll go to to reinvent the wheel.

Still, this is all for fun and games...

Whitetail Sniper.............BULLSH*T, pure and simple! I've been lurking around here for a while, and I just HAD to sign up for this. I've seen lots of wishful thinking on many reloader's parts, but you take the cake! I've never seen so much smoke blown around. First, you go off calling people "dummies" because they didn't use your "magic formula" 26" barrels, then you try to lamely defend your reasoning..............it allows you to cram a couple more grains of powder in the case! LOL
What kind of pressures are you getting out of this "magic gun"? Do you have any clue? Do you even know WHAT to look for?
I see you're from La., I'm not too far away across the line in Tex........let me know the next time you decide to take this fire breather out! I wana see THIS for myself! (From a safe distance, mind you!)
.
.
As is pretty well known, average velocities for a 140 gr. 7-08 run around 2800 f.p.s. in a 24" barrel. An Ackley will, at most, gain another 150 f.p.s., so that puts us around 2950. So, you're telling us that this "magic barrel" will net over 200 f.p.s. with those extra 2 inches???? Oh, I forgot, those 2" will allow for a couple more grains of powder!!!!

GB,

How can you leave that rifle in that pathetic state! Scrap the stock, rechamber, rebarrrel, rebore, do something. Half inch groups with most everything you throw at it? Just think what your missing.

And that dinky little tube that points so well......gotta go!!! A real man would slap a 28" #7 profile on that POS (slightly past optimum I now realize). It's very obvious you haven't checked your velocity!

If this seems a little too much trouble, I've got $150 setting right here that will relieve you of this....., well, .....embarassment. I've got a secret recipie that pushes 140g bullets at .... well you name it I'll get there. (I use really fast powders in 20" barrels to make up for the loss) Just tell me where to send the $150. Before you know it, you'll have all the egg off your face.

I dont remember the velocity of that load. Throat dimensions, lead angle, bore diameter all have a big impact on velocity.

I feel so...well..inadequate with this little dinky 24" barrel I have here.......what am I gonna do? Therapy..that's it..."group"..or rather "velocity therapy may be in order.Maybe I'll have to drag out the chrony and have a little 7mm Rem Mag therapy soon.If that doesn't work I know a guy with a new 700 LSS 7 Ultra Mag,maybe I can borrow it?Amazing how pushing little bits of copper and lead thru a twisted bore with the energy of expanding gases can get people so worked up.......Anyway...like "Stick"...I love this place.

Good Lord. I believe I need to throw away that little Model 7 18.5" bbl 243 of mine. (Not even an Ackley, mind you ) Those deer it has killed must have been ready to croak anyhow . The more I learn about rifles, the more I realise how naive I am in thinking that anything less than 9000 fps is good for nothing larger than armadillos. Who wants this POS Model 7? I'll even pay postage NOT! badger

Hogwild,

Youre making me laugh. Deffinately a kindred spirit. But you know I could never part with the ole "squeeeler". Uh... excuse me...is it manly to name your gun?

Sitka deer,

thanks for the info. I believe your right, I'm bad at remembering names but I know when I hear something I like.

GB, I'll up that to $151.00 plus shipping!
Maybe there's something to these Youth Models. Mine is a .308 with the same good qualities yours has. I love those 20 inch medium barrels! I'd love to put a McM on it, but I only paid $360.00 for the whole thing with a 1x4 Leo. I'd have as much into the stock, though they make me drool!

Teeder,
Sounds like you got a great deal. I really like the low power scopes, especally on fast handling rifles, they offer a large field of view for quick target aquizition. I used a 1.75 X 5 for years in South GA swamp bottoms. I was able to pick the target out in really thick cover. This 2 X 7 leu in the new VX II is an improvement over the old Vari X models. I like it much.

Screw the 7mm-08 and the 26" tube! I want the freaking Chronography he is using!!!! Flinch

Heck, I was already to go buy a 26" 7mm-08 tube and chuck my 27" 7mm mag tube. I am all about getting nearly 3,200 fps out of .308 class cartridge using 44 grains of powder vs. 3,300 fps out of a 7mm mag and using 66 grains of powder. Damn, I though WS found the Holly Grail, then comes along some Alaska dude that only shoots 40 lbs. of powder a year, likes pink rifles, calls fish roosters, wrastles bears for a living and screws it all up for me Well, back to the drawing board. Gosh I love this place. I am really feeling the love today. Flinch

That is why I need a new one Sitka, especially one that tacks on a couple hundred fps I tell you what, a 140 grain ballistic tip at 3,300 fps DEFINITELY has the MOJO for charging chronographs. There was a lot of "bloodshot" meat though Flinch
