I have a friend who has a 300 Weatherby that wants to shoot 200 grain bullets and I offered to load for him. I have no experience with the 300 weatherby and don't have time to do much experimenting and was hoping those who shoot it could help out with their pet load.

Thanks,

I always loaded with H4832 and H870. I got best results with H870 but it is quite dirty and temp sensitive compared to some of the others out there. I don't know what 200 grainer he wants to use, but I found that the regular cup/core 200s weren't all they were cracked up to be. Barnes gave pretty good results but HORRIBLE accuracy and it's no longer made. Best 200 out there is the Partition. I can't imagine much it won't give 100% penetration on. If I were to try 200s again, I would start with Ramshot Magnum and VV N560. If you can't find those, Try the H4831 which worked quite well for me. R22 might be good as well.

I don't recall the powder charges I used but I got right at 3000 fps with a 24" barrel.

D'Arcy Echols is pretty well sold on H1000 for 200 grainers in the .300 Wby, and he builds quite a few.

Personally I like the Weatherby factory loads with the 200 Partition. Pricey, but they get exactly what's claimed in my 24" barrel (Vanguard Sub-MOA), 3060 fps, and fine accuracy.

If looking for a handload would also look in the area of H1000 and Ramshot Magnum.

My favorite 200gr partition load is IMR7828 83gr. Produces 3072fps in a 26" barrel Weatherby with very good accuracy.

The 200 TSX shoots quite well in my 300 Win.

H1000 seems to be one of those sleeper powders over here. It is the Aussie powder AR 2217 and I used it a lot when the RUM's first appeared and it was a perfect match. It does not surprise me that it also works in the Wby case but I have not tried it there myself yet.

7828, H1000 and R25 are all good powders for the 300Wby, just depends upon the individual rifle to tell which one will work the best. Mine seem to prefer 7828 overall.

Aussie,

As I noted, D'Arcy builds quite a few .300 Weatherbys, chambering them with custom reamers that have just enough shorter throats than factory that they will shoot factory ammo safely, but tend to be more accurate. Of course he does a lot of other work too, and uses Krieger barrels. He has tried about every powder and found that with H1000 and bullets from 190-200 grains he can generally get well under MOA at 400 yards, often .5 MOA or even less. Not bad!

IMR 7828 is to the 300 Wby what IMR 4831 is to the 270 Winchester.

All, thanks for the suggestions. Initial testing was done with H1000 and it shot well starting @ 84.5 grains with plenty of room to spare.
