As far as light gathering goes, (especially with good glass like VXIII would have) the returns diminish pretty sharply in objective size above 40.

That's my understanding I guess.

^^^ What he said. ^^^

The larger glass just brings your point of aim farther away from your rifle's bore.

I have a 44 mounted on one gun, the rest are 40's. A 50 sits in the gun closet unused.

Pondering dropping a Timney trigger into the new rifle. I don't like the trigger pull on the Axis, and have had great luck with Timney triggers in the past. From what I've read looking around on the web, I could cut the spring on the factory trigger and lighten the pull to about 4 lbs, but you end up with some creep. I hate that trigger creep. Think I'll just do the Timney and be done with it.

My initial thoughts are: Don't bubba mod your brand new rifle by cutting springs and such. Do an aftermarket drop in trigger if you feel it needs improvement.

Just curious, how much is a Timney trigger?

Don't modify that rifle in any manner until after you have shot it and make sure that it has no problems. Warranty on modified rifles is not fun to deal with.

If you have to take a second shot then you probably shouldn't have taken the first shot.

Depends on what you get one for BM, but usually $100-$125. They're nice, I have one in my .280 that redneck built for me.

Gopher,

I thought the new axis came with Savage's Accutrigger, which is adjustable down to 2 lbs ?

I'm guessing this was new old stock as it doesn't have the Accutrigger.

If so, that's been on the shelf quite a few years. Accutrigger is what, 4-5 years old? Either way, the trigger can be replaced.

Are you sure it's a savage? grin
