Is "kegging" the same as " raking" when you make wine ? As in siphoning the wine off the top off the dead yeast at the bottom?

I think I didn't let the beer or I guess mead " cook" off long enough before I bottled it ?

No, when I keg, I siphon the beer from the fermenter into a keg. Like they have in a bar, except in my shop. Which, FWIW, is better....

So, unlike bottling the beer, where you need to add sugar to carbonate it in the bottle naturally (which leaves a yeast cake on the bottom of the bottle), you siphon it to the keg, hook it up to CO2, and let it carbonate by pressure.

While both fermenting, from what I can gather, they are significantly different processes.

Don't you have to filter the wine?

nope, I don't anyway.
Racking the wine siphons the "clear" wine apart from the sediments on the bottom. as the wine sits and ferments the particles all settle to the bottom of the bucket or carboy (for the most part) and contain much of the tannins and skins and pulp.
To separate them you slip in a long tube with a little bulb on the end that sucks the wine from just above the sludge on the bottom, leaving it clean in the next vessel you put it in.

I usually pout from my bucket through a screen to get the seeds and large stuff out before putting it into secondary fermentation in the carboy. than after a month I rack it into another carboy and let it sit for a year or so. then when I am ready to bottle I use a carboy with a downspout that will fill the bottle from the bottom to keep the wine from oxygenating.

So Tom,the heart dr. says I can't raise my arms above my shoulders for several weeks after they implant the defibrillator. Guessing I won't be hunting out of a tree stand this fall. Thinking about sitting in that little pine island on that clear cut overlooking that little dip where I saw that deer cross. Or maybe that other clear cut further down the road. Your thoughts?

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to stay somewhere where I can at least reach you on the cell. Worries me a bit, as I know how spotty reception was up there.

Tom-I don't want to still hunt your spot, as I don't want to take a chance on screwing up your hunt. We gotta get Jack on a deer. Is he going to shoot this year?

There are miles of logging roads there to still hunt. Not to mention a few areas to "rest" that have deer crossings. You have no worries. There is a section of land there. You won't trample on anybody's spot, probably not even close actually!

Jack can't get a license for a few years...that's Ll il going to say about that. wink

the top one is a different deer I remember him from last year, the two lower pics are the same buck I believe, although there are a few here that look the same.

Tome, I can guarantee you most of these will be dead this year, however we make new ones annually. smile
