I was doing some trading at the gunshow today and wound up with a real nice Savage 170 in 35 remington. I don't know a thing about these other than I love the .35 rem cartridge and the action seems real slick. The only blems are a nice chip off of the toe of the stock and butt plate, and the cover for the end of the magazine is missing. Obviously, the see through mounts are going to have to go if I keep it. The barrel is stamped Savage model 170 Series B. Serial # is c527300. Any info or insight on this gun would be appreciated.
Good shooting,

Ya, I've got some insight for ya, you lucky punk. I've been searching for one of those up here forever. I can find model 1895's but do you think I can find a model 170 in any caliber!

Thanks, you ruined my day!

Oh ya, your gun was made in July of 1977. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

i hear the 170s in .30-30 are way, way accurate. i'd expect the same in .35 rem. they are slick little guns.

Thanks for the info. I always worry about the blue under aluminum scope bases but I pulled them off and everything was fine. Bore and crown are mint, and the finish great except for the broken plastic butt plate. The butt has no markings so it shouldn't be too hard to find a matching replacement. The piece that may be hard to find is the little dust cap that goes over the end of the magazine. I wasn't planning to own one of these but I think it's growing on me.

I'm pretty sure you can get parts for this from Steve at savparts or Numrich. I have seen the stocks on ebay and other places too.

Good score on that one!! I've got the .30-30 and am still hunting for the .35

for a firearm made in 1977, it look nice and well taken care of.. you should have a lot of deer in your freezer with it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Man, the net is GREAT. I have found the plastic butt plate and the magazine cap for just a couple of bucks. I pulled the scope off of the "carry handle" mounts and mounted a older busnell banner 1.5x4x20mm on low weaver rings and a one piece base and it now points like a bird gun. I'll probably be selling this one after deer season as there seems to be some interest in these guns and it won't be replacing my savage brush gun as my primary deer getter. I made up a couple of boxes of handloads with some 180 grain speer flatpoints, so it may get a deer or 2 by the end of the season. Thanks for all the help and info.

Okay, I think we give longtimer a round of applause for doing some AWESOME searching before asking. This is definitely a record...

PS: I'm guessing a google link is how he found it.

Hey MAD DOG, I have one of these Model 170's, with see through mounts and a Redfield 4X. I am from Erie, Pa. a crossed the lake. I don't know how hard it is to ship from us to can but if it isn't a big problem, let me know and maybe we can swing a deal. It's in 30-30 and is in good condition other than six notches filed in the but stock for deer the previous owner shot with it..
