I'll try it again.

I have a 336TS on which I would like to put a butt pad and sling swivels. I don't really want to bugger the orignal butt stock; time and $ to install parts would be about the same as a new or used stock with parts already installed.

I know that straight grip 444 and 1895 stocks fit. Are there versions intended for the 1894 or 39 that will fit a 1983 336TS? I'm trying to open up options.

I have seen straight stock with thin rubber pad and swivel on a 1894, which would be perfect. Marlin customer service was less than helpful or knowlegeable.

My guess is no, but that is only a guess - not first hand knowledge. Seems the upper and lower tangs on the 336 frame are beefier. The guys over at Marlinowners.com would certainly know. Plus there's a gent there that goes by the handle of tomray who works at Marlin. Don

I had never really thought about it but I own a 1894,1895, and several 336's with straight grips. Got them out of the safe and compared them and they seem identical. Not sure If they will interchange, but just looking from ther outside it looks possible.

Oops - responded to the wrong post.

But, now that we're on the subject I wonder if the 336 pistol grip stock will fit the 1894 straigh grip action...probably not likely, huh?

If they are both straight or both are pistol gripped, they should interchange, at least the 1894 and 1895 models. The model 39 stocks are unique. A little sanding may be required but, for the most part, the stocks are identical. To change from a straight grip to a pistol grip, you would also have to change out the trigger floor plate and possibly a few other parts.

All the pistol grip stocks interchange, 336, 94, 95, and 39. So I would expect the straight stoks to interchange, too.

FWIW, Ken "leverdude", seems to be respected at marlinowners.com WRT rifle mods, parts, experience, etc., given my surfing previous posts. Ken responds that within a manufacturing time period, the 1894, 39A, 336, 444, 45/70 should all interchange buttstocks. Assuming straight grip to straight grip, of course.

marlinowners.com comments on interchanging stocks

I am seeing more and more comments to the same effect. After all of that, (just trying to expand options,) I realize that having the stock comb at scope level instead of iron sight level would be extremely nice. I know at least one version of the 444 is set up that way.

I'd still like to see someone actually swap a 336 straight grip stock with a same-vintage 1894. Now, it's just a matter that I gotta know.

If you cannot believe the Leverdude you will not believe the rest of us. So why not buy a few straight grip guns and try it yourself?

JB,
I'm not sure which "us" you refer to. I've been asking around for a few months, and I have at least 15 different opinions disagreeing with leverdude in one way or another. And a few that do agree. Notice that leverdude did not directly answer my question. It's not about trust; I'll trust someone who answers the question here. If I had time and money to throw at a relatively minor project, buy a bunch of stocks to try, I would have done so. But in that case, I would not have needed to come here, or share my search results with a fair number of others who are apparently looking at the same issue. Not so? wink

I believe leverdude. At the same time, I'll up my bid limit on the next high-comb 444 stock to come by, and drop the 1894 question. Thanks for tryin'.

Randy,

Maybe my post did not read as intended. If I offended I'm sorry. However, You said that you wanted to "see" the interchangeability of the stocks. How else will you see it unless you change them yourself?

I can only attest to the interchange of the pistol grips since I have only one straight stock Marlin and six models with pistol grip. The pistol grip stocks all interchange ( I switched several to make sure), so I think it reasonable to assume that the straight stocks will interchange as well. But you are right, I do not have first hand knowledge on the straight stock Marlins. Leverdude was trying to say that all the stocks will fit but some stocks may need a little fine tuning for a perfect fit.

Very smart of Marlin to only need two stock inletting patterns, pistol and straight grip, for all their rifles.

Ken aka Leverdude, does know what he is talking about. When it comes to Marlins the man has a lot of knowledge. He is a friend and at Marlinowners a moderator.

For an answer to your question, yes they will fit. For a little more on the subject they say a picture is worth a 1000 words. Heres a picture but not that many words.
