No, and sort of. The ballistic Silver Tip .30-30 is a coated bullet with a polymer ball making the bullet a round nose. The velocity on the samples I chronographed are typical .30-30 but the accuracy was quite good when shot from the 26", 20" and 16" barrels. I posted some pictures on the Beartooth forum but they are just .30-30's with nickel cases. The polymer ball should help expansion.

I am not much of a computer guy but here is a link to the page in the thread. The picture of the Winchester and Hornady ammo side by side is midway down the page.

Over on I believe marlin owners forum there was one I believe 6sitka or some such alias that has a 360 yard kill.

.

Why would that be noteworthy? Any good shooter can hit big game at 300 yards.

It's not so much hitting at 300 yard as whether or not it would be good on elk at just under 300. Comparing the 30/30 LR round vs 170 gr load, the 30/30 LR has the same energy at just under 300 yards as the 170 gr has at 100. On paper it looks like it should be all right for elk. I wouldn't hesitate take a good shot at an elk at 100 yards with a 170 gr. bullet.

I thought someone may have tried a long shot on elk too.

No kills to report because my gun just doesn't like the 30-30 LR round. I bought two boxes when it first came out and I was all over the place off the bench at 100 yards...+/- 6" groups....I wasn't pleased. Hornady Custom 170 grain out of same gun gets me 2" groups all day. My gun is a 336SS..only two years new when I tried the LR ammo. Maybe one would get better results with the longer barrel on the XLR. With my gun and this round, I'd be lucky to hit an elk at 300 yards..let alone kill it. :-)

Scott, I have a 336SS also (30-30) and it was not very fond the LR ammo either. I have a peep sight on my 336SS and was getting 4" groups.

What kind of sights were you using?

I have used the LR ammo in my H&R 1871 45-70. The rifle has a peep sight also and it shot 3" groups with the LR ammo.

Anyone shooting 30/30 Lever revolution ammo make 300 yd kill on big.

I know a guy that claimed he had done this. But when he was questioned closly it was 328 steps downhill and uphill.
It sounded more like 150 to 200 yards to me.

It seems from what I've read that guns either love or hate the LR ammunition with "Most" guns liking the LR ammunition. Those that do report that they are nearly the most accurate bullets they have ever used. Some report that they are better than perfected handloads they have developed over years. However it seems that there are a minority of guns that just hate them and they are the worst accuracy they have ever seen.

I was wrong on my earlier post above. A person named "Bigred" on the Marlin owners forum has used the new 308MX with the Hornady ammunition to kill and elk at distance and at least one deer at something like 365 yards as well as other kills.

I also have read many, many, many reports of excellent terminal results from the use of the new LR ammunition. Some reports are that it performs better than any ammunition they have ever used. I also have read that the gummy tip breaks up and the bullet has separated from the core but the deer is dead. It seems like the gummy tip acts like a hollow point and expansion is immediate and pretty dramatic. The separation may be from the expansion being too much of a good thing and it keeps curling back to the point that the core becomes exposed.

Personally I have not tried the LR ammunition. I use a 35 Rem and the Remington 200 core lock works just fine for my 50 yard shot I get at deer. Unless I hear some more reason of terminal performance being superior to the factory 200 core lockts, I see no reason to go to the gummy tips as I surly do not need the extra velocity and "flatter shooting" when I only get a shot between 50 and 100 yards!

I've only put a few LE rounds through my Marlins (all in .30-30). Three shots from a 30AS measured 7/8" (outstanding!). Three rounds through a 336CS measured just under 2" (certainly good enough to hunt with!). Point of impact was VERY different from more traditional fodder. Havent' hunted with the LE stuff, but I've stocked up on some in case my son wants to hunt whitetails over a field with longer shooting opportunities. (Of course, this would require adjusting his scope for the wunderammo).

I still have some 600 rounds loaded up for my 30-30. Once I get through those, I might try some of the LR stuff. smile

Cole K,

2-7x 3200 Bushnell Elite, Leupold rings and Leupold one piece base. Best 3 shot 100 yard group to date is 1.25" using the Hornady Custom 170 grain Interlock. Seems I can get 2 of 3 bullets to hit within .25" but can't get three in a row that close:-). More than meets my standards for a handy lever gun in the Michigan deer woods!

Haven't seen the "gummy" tip LR, but if the tip is that soft maybe it deforms somewhat when in the magazine from the spring tension. At 100 you might not see much difference, but at 300 you would...jus thinkin'

I personally won't be shooting at any game past 150 yards with any of my 30-30's.

I know that the LR ammo does extend the range, etc. but if I'm going to be in a position to shoot something at 300 yards, it'll be with one of my bolt guns - .270 Win, etc.

I see no reason to try and make a .270 out of a 30-30, that is nonsence..The 30-30 with a good 3X scope IS a 300 yard rifle if you can shoot..beyond that I wouldn't use it, as you will end up with too many broken legs on deer...

To me the beauty of a 30-30 is iron sights, easy to pack, good on a horse and a 200 yard deer rifle, that is what it was designed for and that is where it works best.

It seems to me that the purpose of the lever revolution ammo is to get 300 yard flat shooting performance out of a 30/30.

No offense, but are you the same Atkinson who shoots antelope with a .222 and .223? If so, why use such a small caliber varmint rifle to shoot big game?

I have made a 230 yard shot on a nice doe with 30.30 LE ammo and I was very pleased. My Marlin 336 was made in 1953 and it belonged to my Grandpa. My gun loves the new ammo and I still can't get over the accuracy and killing power of the new round. I have shot a lot of deer with the old gun and I feel like I know what it can do . The new ammo from Hornady humbled me. I swear the wound channel seems similar to that of a 30.06. I actually have 3x9 on the gun. It looks a little silly but it works well and I am used to it. It is my gun of choice during season only staying home to allow my stainless Ruger 30.06 out in foul weather.
