For a long action Featherweight to use I would go with the 30-06. I would prefer a 270 to a 308 as well.

The .308 is a lot more likeable in a Montana/Model 7 or when it is loaded to a slightly lower pressure as used in M1A's and lever guns.

As demonstrated in the Montana a rifle much lighter than a conventional M70 can be built around it.

I remember maybe 4 pre-64 model 70 fwts in 308 crossing my
path in the last few years, I have lost track of how many
270 and 30-06s I have seen, the biggest heart breaker I
have seen in a pre-64 70 was a custom 35 Whelen that had
been rechambered from a 35 Remington.

Well, twenty or thirty years ago I bought the very last supergrade featherweight stock from Winchester and put it onto a standard weight 7x57. Rifle was stolen but it is out there womewhere.

If it was SG Featherwieght stock and you put it on a standard weight 7x57 than you would have had to hog out the barrel channel to fit the heavier barrel and the rear sight boss so it could never really be put back on a Featherweight barreled action without obviouslly being able to see that it's not original.

For hunting, 30/06 all the way. For collecting and or re-selling, maybe the .308 by a hair but not by much (enough) if you plan to hunt with it first.
