Looking at Paul's 3" 629 gives me the "I wants" cool gun. A while back I got a deal on some SW grips and in the pile was a real nice set of SW wood finger groove grips for a round butt "N" frame now I have too start hunting a gun to fit them. Mb

Those were hand cast from a Lyman mold. They were given to me from a friend, as I don't cast. They are Lyman 429348 which is out of production. They drop at about 175 grains approximately. There are a couple places online that sell them every once in a while, but only one currently and that shops prices are too cost prohibitive for me to buy in bulk.

I am looking at possibly having a mold made and having a commercial outfit make the bullets for me in large quantities and powder coat them as well. It might be a bit, as I have to sell some more ammo to get the funds to fund that little venture, but I think it will be well worth it as they shoot so amazingly well.

Something about short ammo in speedloaders tickles my funny bone.

RCBS makes dbl. Cavity mold for a 225 grain swc with gas check that has allways shot good in the various N frames I 've had. So after acquiring a pre cross bolt 1894 44 mag I decided to try them to. Not to much testing yet but they showed a couple good 50 yd groups. Hell of a lot cheaper to shoot than jacketed, 10.5 unique works well for a mid range load. Mb

This is my dad's .44 Magnum Colt Anaconda. It's the gun learned shooting handguns with and I have been a Colt man ever since.
Due our - let's say not very sensible - 2 handgun rule I do not have a .44 Magnum on my own and went with .454 Casull instead. I truly believe that the .44 Magnum is one of - if not THE - most versatile handgun cartridge.
I am also noticing a distinct lack of .44 Magnum DA/SA revolvers in the new market. The Dan Wessons were also really cool but sadly out of production. I sure hope that CZ brings back the Anaconda.

I need a 329 some kinda bad. My 629 will have to do for now. Spent a few rounds behind a 6” Anaconda the old man bought the year they were introduced. One gun of his I want. I own a few .357’s but don’t really see the point when you can have a .44mag stoked with 240gr XTP’s.

The second most used bullet in my model 69 is a 250 grain wadcutter from Ballisticast. Don’t remember the mold number. Shoot the dot torture with it as well the wonderfully perfect H&G # 503. Can’t ask for a better companion working and playing in the Absorka mountains.

Just a couple old model Ruger Blackhawks here as far as 44 mag goes.

I love my 8 inch Anaconda. I wish I would have gotten a 4 inch back in the day too. Dealer cost was around 420-250 back then if I recall.

How do you like the red dot on your 44 and what mount is that?

The red dot makes precise shooting substantially easier. I had Lasik surgery done a number of years back and now the front sights are not as crisp as the once were so the RDOs help.

The mount is a Weigatinny by Jack Weigand. Basically a modified 1913 rail. Nice little setups.

And now for something off the beaten path-

I bought this via guns.com last summer, who listed it as an "Uberti Cattleman 45 Colt". When I got it in my hands, it was a 70's Iver Johnson Cattleman 44 magnum. I had a 7 1/2" 357 IJ Cattleman about time this 44 was built (1974) and it was a squirrel-murder machine with 38 wadcutters. I love single actions with the 1860 grip frame so wrong caliber or not, it was coming home.



Uberti apparently used one front sight for all these guns, The 357s regulated pretty well but like a lot of the 44s & 45s, it shot about 20” high at 50 yards, with full power 240 grain 44 Magnum loads. I can’t abide a gun that don’t shoot to the sights, so I sawed and filed a brass extension and sweat soldered it on top of the front sight.I worked the front sight down a few thousandths at a time, until I got perfect 50 yard regulation with 240 grain magnums. I turned my attention to the 100 yard plate. I used Winchester 240 grain soft point and started holding on the top third of the plate. I could tell I was hitting but couldn't call the hits from that distance. I thought I was hitting high, so I held a little lower and dropped the shot right above the revolver in the photo. That one to the right, I just tossed.



For an old 44 with oddball 0.434” throats, it shoots pretty good. The sight mod made it easy to hit with and an icicle-crisp trigger that settled in at 2 ¾ pounds don’t hurt. I'm having more fun with this old Uberti than any single action in the last 30 years.

Sarge that’s about the second one of those I’ve ever seen. The other my wife bought for $20 because it didn’t work. Like Colt lockwork SAs do from time to time it had a broken/sear bolt spring. I put a wire spring replacement in it that I had lying in the toolbox and it works perfectly. Main difference being that ours has adjustable sights. I haven’t shot it much, used to loan it out to friends or family who needed a tent gun in bear country. I should get it out and fiddle with it soon.

Your Missus stole that one, Kid. The adjustable sight IJ 44 was known as the 'Buckhorn' and the fixed sight version was the Cattleman Magnum. My BIL had a 44 Buckhorn when we were 17-18 years old and while someone had filed the rear leaf to a V notch, it shot real well.

Congrats! That's a find. Those were advertised in Guns and Ammo or The Shotgun News (I forget which) all the time, when I was a kid. I always wanted one. They may have even been made in the New York factory...same place that originally made the Colt Blackpowder series, in the white. That was about the smallest 44 Mag. made at the time. That is very cool. About on a par with a Herter's Power Mag., coolness factor wise.
