Are you saying you have a Model 70 serialized G34? Or is it, like, G34XXXX? I really want to know! grin

That link will NOT work for M70's with letters in the SN.

Does the "G" represent/convert to a digit? I have two M70's, and when utilizing the above link, plugging in just the numerical digits indicate both rifles are Pre-64.... and I highly doubt that.

I've read '69 is when they started with the G but it's only something I read someplace.

Yes I tried that site but with out the letter in front of it. The date was 1955 and I would love to say I made a heck of a deal. smile Some one told me that they never produced a serial number list in the 90's when they started with a Alpha????

I have 3 PF winchesters that I am pretty sure were made during the 1980's that also start with G and then 7 digits. I have tied several websites and have never found anything. Short of calling Winchester, I have no other ideas. With Winchester in the mess they are in I'm not even sure there would be anyone there who could help.

G's started around '69 and the links everyone keep putting up don't work for lettered serial numbers.

I have the book: Winchester dates of manufacture 1849-1984.

On page 48: "After 1968 prefix G is found in front of numbers."

However on the Model 70 the last year listed in the book is 1982 with a starting serial number of G1537134.

Is this rifle a late model Classic?

Reba,

Thanks for the help. One of mine is SN G15374XX, so it is pretty safe it was made in 1982.

ehunter,

It might help if you would describe the rifle you actually have, but without that, a G34XXXX (note: a 6 digit number following the "G") would have been manufactured in about 2000. A G34XXXXX (note: a 7 digit number following the "G"), to the best of my knowledge was never manufactured. The highest numbers I have ever seen are G304XXXX, and these would be the very latest numbers manufactured before the New Haven plant closed in 2006.

I would add that there always seems to be a lot of confusion about the "G" prefix. To cut to the chase, a serial number with the "G" prefix, and a serial number without a prefix are plain and simple, different serial numbers. Period. You cannot use the charts for non-prefix numbers and expect a "G" prefix number to correlate.

Another reason for confusion, is that the "G" serial numbers do a bit of jumping around. When Winchester began producing the Classics in 1990, they went back and started using lower "G" prefix numbers, that had never been used, when they started the "G" prefix in 1969, or whenever, on the push-feeds. Then they later jumped over the previously used "G" numbers, to continue on with Classics that have 7 digits following the "G". This is all as clear as mud, I am sure! grin

I also might add, if your rifle is not a Classic, all bets are off! I don't follow non-Classic serial numbers! But, I believe any late production rifles should fall into this regime. grin

I only made that comment because of the negatives for the rifles that were made just as they were shuting down the factory. I have not been able to get out and shoot it until this coming weekend. I know that my buddies classic is a tack driver. I am getting cabin fever.. grin

Not if it has a 6 digit serial. Early 90's guns have 5 digit serials.

Did we at least reach agreement that S/N's from 1971 thru 1991 had a "G" followed by seven numerals?

Here is another one. M70 Featherweight push feed in 257 Rob. Serial number G2066XXX. I was told this would be early to mid 80s. Is that accurate? Also, was the guy correct saying this chambering was only done a couple of years.

1991/1992

Don't think 257 was cataloged for these years. Must be a special order, or rebarrel.

Hook - the guy is correct. The M70 fwt was made in 257 and also 7X57 for a couple of years when it was reintroduced in the early 80's. I have one in the Bob.

Yes the 257 was produced in the early 80's, however the serial number he provided, G206xxxx, means the receiver he has is from the early 90's.

I hope nobody minds if I piggyback onto this thread as well. I have 2 Classics:

first one - regular Classic Sporter, 270 Win, serial # G3002XXX.
other one - Classic Compact, 7mm-08, serial # G374XXX.

I would much appreciate knowing production years for them. Bought new a few years ago but I have no idea if they were new or old stock. Thanks in advance.

If possible, I'd like to get in on this. One of my Winchesters is a Classic Sporter, .270 w/Boss. It has a strange Serial Number according to the others listed on this thread: G100XX.

I'm not reading it wrong either. Even had the wife put her specks on and read it too. G100XX (5 digits)

Might anyone have a date for this one? I know it must be from the somewhere in the 90s.

Thanks for any info.

Hello,

I have a friend who has several Winchester 70.

Can you help me date these rifles :

G1127896 (375 HH)
G55003 (270 Win)
G95270 (338 WM with BOSS system)
G25972 (280 Rem)
G2458215 (243 Win)

He is looking for spare parts to repair his 270 Win.
Can you still easily find spare parts ?

Best regards,

The arms collectors website is a good one, but it does not list any Winchester 70's of recent manufacture. Probably nothing post-64. I would be interested in finding a site listing manufacture dates for Winchesters made from the 80's to present, but have never found anything.

I have a 7mm Rem Mag in Win. m70 Custom Super Grade, controlled round feed, SN G1123. According to my shooting book it was first shot on Dec.20th, 1992. Based on this it was purchased just 2 or 3 days before since I always get them to the range ASAP.

How much earlier than this it was built I can't say, but based on the SN it couldn't have been too much before.

Maybe this info will help some of you.

I hope i am not to late to add on also.
I have a model 70 .416 serial G20XX and trying to find out more information on the gun. A gun smith friend said that it is not stock and is pretty customized, but there is nothing on it that indicates that it was done by a custom shop.
Any help is appreciated, thanks

Further to my post of May 28, 2009 I stumbled over this thread again today and went back and looked in my loading book again. Found I had made an error.

In Dec. 1992 I already had almost 1300 rounds through my Custom Super Grade. It follows that I must have purchased it in Dec., 1991. Don't know what I did with the records for the first 1300 rounds. When making my original post I just looked at the date and not at the number of rounds fired.

My 4 digit serial number is correct. Possibly it is so low because the rifle came through the Custom shop.

Thanks baltz. I have been unable to figure it out. When I first started looking I read that the G prefix numbers started around 1970 but the numbers were much higher that mine. I read somwhere else that that at some point Winchester dropped back and began to use the lower, 5 and 6 digit numbers with the G prefix.

Anyway, could you tell me where you located the info. or determined the date?

It was driving me nuts.

Thanks,

twofish

But, I believe any late production rifles should fall into this regime. grin

Great info. mudstud...thanks!

Bluebook of gun values has the serial # break down. Not complete but it covers a lot.

Stew57, you might want to edit your post and X out the last three digits of your serial number. It's not a good idea to post your serial number online and folks can still help you date the rifle knowing the number of digits.

I'm gonna guess 1995-1999 or so. I have one SN 148XXX that I believe to be a 1994 gun and another 824XXX that is supposed to be 1999-2001. It is hard to pin these down exactly I've not found any reliable on-line data.

Thanks I thought he had it longer than that. Beautiful gun with a Trijicon 3-9x 40 scope attached. Action is very smooth. She sits next to my Mannlicher-Schoenauer 1952 30.06. The gun is so nice I may start looking for one in 300 Win Mag.

The Classic BOSS was only made mid 90's. A serial number and I could put a year on it.

Hi

Hope it's ok to tag onto this thread yet another serial number date request.

I have a Winchester Model 70 Sporter Varmint .223 Rem Rifle Bolt Action made in New Haven with a serial number of G20945xx which I'd like to know the year of manufacture?

I'm assuming it' has a twist rate of 1:9?

Would you be able to help please?

Looking for any help in finding year of a Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight model G233xx was made that I just bought. It also has a black packmyr decelerator pad and not the typical red. I have a 2006 model new haven Win Model 70 in 300 wsm that has the balck packmyr pad, but not sure when Winchester started putting these on model 70's. Any help greatly appreciated on dating the year made would be greatly appreciated.

There isn't a lot of accurate info out there. But if it is a Classic with a SN that low It almost has to be 1st year production, 1992 or 1993 I'd think. Most anything with 6 digit SN's are made prior to 2000, 7 digits are 2000-2006 guns. I've never seen a 5 digit SN. That is probably as close as you're going to get.

The stock, or the pad may not be original.

hello folks! new member and this is my first post! i hope this thread is still accurate and one of the historians here can give me a hand

the other day i was in a hunting shop here in south Alabama browsing the selection and i noticed the owner was selling a bunch of guns from his collection. one of which was a beautiful model 70 featherweight, new haven build, with a stainless 24" barrel..he was asking 1000 dollars for it. it has some really dark wood and the pink/red butt pad on it. the guy over the counter told me it was rather rare and valuable (hence the price) which sparked my interest, moreso the idea of being able to have this to hand down to my children someday really got the gears turning...however the money wasn't on hand at the time

however! i just reenlisted in the army and got my first bonus in 13 years, so i ran back up there today and fortunately the owner of the shop was there. i told him id give him 100 dollars cash now and promise in writing to pay for it in full by the end of January if he'd so let me....thankfully he did! so im soon to be a new owner of one of the most beautiful winchesters i have ever seen!

now ive tried to research (read this whole thread), searched gunbroker to no avail and a myriad of other sources. from what i can tell, this particular firearm had either a larger solid black butt pad, or the red/pink one mine has. my question to ya'll is, when was it manufactured? im quite the gun nut but i am new to the winchester world, and very egar to learn!

the serial number is G3032563 again a model 70 featherweight .308 stainless barrel 24"

if anyone could be of any help id greatly appreciate it! happy new year!!!

If it's a USRAC classic, then it was manufactured, like JMR said earlier, around 2001-2006. After you get it, post it in the Winchester collectors forum here. I'm sure there are a lot of guys that would like to check out your rifle. Like the shop owner said, it is pretty rare. 24" featherweight, stainless and wood stock. Probably a very nice rifle. Congrats.. Redneck here could probably tell you more about the rifle. I believe he likes that style..

Now come on, he said it was "rare". A featherweight with a 22" tube isn't "rare"...

Personally, I saw too many 7 digit examples (2003-2006) that turned me off quality wise, plus I really don't like the very dark walnut finish. But that doesn't mean yours isn't a good one. It does still have the best factory hunting trigger ever made, and if the function is fine and the looks suit you, enjoy it.

Personally, I saw too many 7 digit examples (2003-2006) that turned me off quality wise, plus I really don't like the very dark walnut finish. But that doesn't mean yours isn't a good one. It does still have the best factory hunting trigger ever made, and if the function is fine and the looks suit you, enjoy it.

the dark walnut is what drew me to it, having a liking towards super grades with dark wood as well, this one was just too special. ill be sure to post it up here for everyone to see as soon as i lay my hands on it. but first i have to sell the cdl sf in order to get my hands on this one!

They were all mismarked in that time period. There is no 24” Fwt barrel, only 22” or shorter, with 1/4” bbl. shank.

Yep, a 7 digit M70 with the dark stock and slabbed bolt shroud at the safety. Only unusual thing is the red recoil pad, rather than black. They were likely using up what was left of the red inventory before going to black. Perhaps this is an early 7 digit model?

Are you counting the “G” as a digit?
A “G” four digit will be an early 90’s CS gun ...

CS - custom shop. And edited my above for clarity, as how it read and what was meant didn’t match. Not enough coffee!
Win70 is of course correct on a FIVE digit starting 51 being ‘93.

Just found an XTR Sporter, (push feed) 25-06 in near new condition, Ser/ G20509XX. Red pad, 24" barrel.

From the input shown on this thread, I'm guessing '92-93 manuf?

Thanks for any effort toward nailing this one down.

I have never been able to find a listing of serial numbers vs years for the G series model 70's can someone give me a manufacture date on
my model 70 Fwt. - G1674xx

I think I remember buying it in the mid-90's but I am starting to question myself, not that it matters all that much because it is not going anywhere.

Thanks in advance - drover

Classic from 1996.

It is a 243 Fwt stainless/synthetic stock (factory), now I am confused - I thought Classic meant the standard sporter contour.

It sure was easier figuring out the pre-64's.

Thanks, drover

Classics were made as Sporters and Featherweights. Does it not say "Classic Stainless" on the right side of the barrel?

How’s about G297527?

New Haven, early 2000’s Classic perhaps? That’s my guess but would love to know.

I am away from home for the next 3-4 weeks but will check it when I get back. The 1996 time frame seems right though.
I appreciate you providing the information - thank you very much.

Drover,
“Classic” came from return of the “classic” CRF.
So, it designated the CRF, not the barrel contour.
Lots of variations of classic - classic stainless, classic featherweight, classic sporter, classic sm, etc.

According to George Madis in his dates of manufacture book the G serial numbers began in 1970. 1969 was the last year of the non letter.
while the book claims from 1849-1984 the model 70's only show in the book through 1982, so I'm unsure what happened after that.

I found a push feed, Featherweight in 6.5x55, serial G198xxxx (7numbers)

Would I be correct if this is 89-90 production?

Was these good quality years at Winchester... ?

I've got a Fwt CRF 7x57 folding leaf iron sight, and the original front sight hood, and a red butt pad marked USRAC, and 2 floral or medallion? "buttons" in the pad inside the circle of tiny print, in better than average condition with SR # G15709XX. Been told it is a 1982 manufacture...correct?

Going to look at a M70 270 CRF Stainless with Classic engraved on the side of the barrel in a black "tupperware" stock that is supposed to have made made sometime in the early '90's.Does that sound about right? Owner sez he bought it, sighted it in and put it away in storage.
Just got pics and the SR# is G567XX and the gun looks brand new with no wear apparent on the black butt pad that is legible in the pics and says USRAC in the tiny print on the outside of the circle. . . So my ? is Value? and year of manufacture? on both rifles .
Thanks Ron

what do you use as a reference. and can anyone enlighten me as to why some super grades from the same year had recessed sling mounts and black lacquered on the end of the fore grip area as others did not (no lacquer and no recession on the swivels)

Do you recall what year? There was a limited run of PF supergrades in ‘93 which had no dark forends or typical sg sling mounts; the classic (CRF) of same year had the more typical configuration you describe. And then there were the custom classics ...

Bringing this thread back up hoping someone can help me out, I've looked around the net and can't narrow a production year down on my model 70 but guessing early 90's??

It's an XTR sporter magnum in 338 win mag Ser # G181xxxx...

Thanks for any help guys.

ETA: I just found a site that lists serial numbers up to 91. It appears this rifle was made in 1986. Does this sound correct?

And for those interested I found this info here:

https://www.midwestgunworks.com/winchester-model-70-information.html

Got a new 7mm ss/ftw need some help with the year. It’s a 5 digit. G66571. Pretty happy to have found a nice 5 digit with very minimal damage. Can anyone tell me the year? Thanks !

Also, does anyone know where I could get a stainless cap to replace the black one. Love the new ss supergrades and the silver cap they have put a nice touch to it! This one has wonderful wood so I’m wanting to dress it up!
