My last thread about the BLR, 450 magnum went so well (NOT)
I thought I might start another. Again like last time feel free to verbelly turn me up side down step in my arm pits and ride me like a pogo stick !.
I handeld a BLR take down recently and a few of the regular BLR,s , in .308.
Handy little carbines, and they have a reputation for decent accuracy.
Having tried out the take down feature on a .308 , can any one tell me why it could,nt be done as a switch barrel ?
I mean start with a .308, order a barrel with a for stock in .243 and another in .358 win.
That would be cool as hell. The scope mounts on the reciever, so it would need to zeroed, each time you switched,
But what a usfull rifle that would be.
I would guess that the replacment barrel for stock kit would cost a buck or two.
Mabye to much to make it practicle, But I would think a barrel and for stock would be no more than 300, when the rifle in its complete form go for I think about 850.00.
I would love to have a rifle like that.

When I saw the take down version, I was thinking the same thing.

260, and a 358 may be a good set.. Hmmm That would take me from mousees to moosees.
Does Browning offer such an option? May be worth contacting them to see if a custom set up could be done...

A complete barrel with sights and forend for a BLR Takedown is $467.50.

Obviously, you have to stay with calibers which will fit your bolt head, like .243, 7mm-08, .260 Rem, .308 and .358.

You also have to stay with long action or short action.

Thanks lee, where did you find this out ?
Its an awfull lot of money and I am not sure I would do one for what would add up to about 1300.00, But its an interesting thought.
A guy with any combination of 2 on any of the different actions would be prety well set up for a couple weeks in the woods chasing quite a variety of game.
I like the way a short action BLR feels. Since i love the .308 that is where I would start, But Mauser kid, (gotta love that name) Has a very practicle Idea. 260 for anything up to caribu and black bear. .358 win for moose and or elk.
You could fit a barreld assembly in lots of back packs, and have a very versital kit.

I have handled the .308 and taken it down. It is instant to take apart and to reassemble. And it all slips into a short Berretta, Browning or Boyt takedown shotgun case.

I have a SIG Sauer takedown bolt action, which is a neat job, but it takes about 2 minutes to take it down and pack it.

It cost me about $1,200 to build a takedown Mauser in 6.5x55.
A new Sauer 202 costs about $2,500, and barrels are about $800.

A Blaser bolt action with 2 barrels is closer to $4,000.

List on the BLR TD is $899.00 and street price is under $700.
$1,200 for a takedown with 2 barrels is pretty cheap.

Put a couple scout scopes on the barrels, you shorten your resighting process..

The prices Lee24 shares, makes it worth looking into..

I just looked at the browning web sight, to reserch a little more about the take down levers. There are 2 versions in each action length.
Pistol grip and strait grip. The strait grip has a band on the forstock while the pistol grip has a schnaubel type forstock without a band.
I would think they are interchangable , but who knows. The strait stock sure lookes better. I think a .308 or .358 with the banded front end and or a .243 .260 with out the band makes sense.
Barrel band can have a bad effect on acurracy and to my twisted mind , the smaller the bore the more you need acuracy.
I could find no reference to buying a switch barrel kit though.

Seems to me, this is a moot point, the whole Idea is easy transport. I would think that a 308 would be plenty for what we hunt here in America, and dam near every thing else in the world save for or five species of big game. One of these Black T's and hone the action and a little trigger, and refinish the stock to an oil finish, would make a very nice truck or airplane and helicopter gun. Going to have to get one to play with.

I did not think they were selling barrels either,
But with a price like 467.50, it sounds like lee has talked to somebody who knows.
If I were to do it now, I would go .308 and .260.
Gmsemel has a point , certainly a .308 is about all you need and there really is not much you can do with a .243 or a .358 you can't do with a .308,
but I just think it would be fun.
Lots folks will tell you about trajectory differences and all, but it If you can shoot, you can shoot,
Any of the .308 based rounds will work for deer sized game out to 300 yards. Toss the .243 and they will wourk on bigger stuff.

That is $30 less than I paid for a used BLR in 358 in Oct.
