I am in Idaho. I do not eat Jacks, They usually have all sorts of critters crawling on them. In fact I rarely touch them in warmer weather.

We have a few cottontails too, though their numbers are not even close to the Jackrabbit population. However, I do not shoot them unless I am hungry.

Oh, ok. Just laying out some bait for coyotes, then? Good plan.

The interesting part is that they never last long.

I have done quite a bit of night hunting (legally) of them and when you come back through an area an hour or three later, 80% will already be gone. The desert owls will actually tear off the skin and leave the meat. I have seen a bunch of partially skinned jackrabbits and had wondered what in the world was doing that till I sat on a bluff one evening and watched two little owls skin some jacks I had shot down below me on a desert two track. Pretty neat to watch actually. Beats TV.

The badgers, coyotes, foxes, crows and everything else make very short work of them.

I think jackrabbits only exist to be a food source for practically everything else.

I read a recipe for jack's once and it was in a book by Barsness I believe.

1. Take one jack and skin.

2. Put in pot with large rock and boil.

3. When fork can puncture rock, throw away jack and eat rock.

Or something like that.

As I said in the other post, we don't even have Jackrabbits around here. In farming country, they are a very damaging pest, ranking right up there with Prairie Dogs, which no longer inhabit these parts either. I believe the introduction of pesticides was more to blame for their demise than folks hunting them with Craftsman's or CeeTee's. Back when Jacks abounded though, my people ate them all the time. My guess is that they ain't any good in the high desert country due to their diet. They were eating corn and such around here. Back in the 20's and 30's, maybe even a little Hemp. smirk

Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.

When your ship comes in. ... make sure you are willing to unload it.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

LOL, that's a good question.

That was in south Texas. Most guys I knew referred to that as a Fallow. That one had light spots on it exactly like an Axis deer but it's hide was much darker than any Axis I'd seen or killed.

Long story short, every Texan I asked, gave me a different answer. The landowner stated very clearly he wanted all "freakshows" (exotics) shot so I knew it was OK to pop her. There was more than one out on that property. I always meant to show my then neighbor/biologist Bob Zaiglin a picture but I never did.

It tasted damn good though. grin

The only three 44's I have left. The one 44 I really regret trading off was a limited run Ruger Superblackhawk that was produced in a 5 inch version with a Blackhawk grip frame. [Linked Image]

Those are three sharp looking Smiths! Man, there are some fine .44s on the campfire.

A Virginian Dragoon in .45 Colt was my first centerfire handgun. I've still got the nice hard case it came in. In fact, my 1964 era GI Joe is stored in it.

I like the pics there Cole. I too have one of those repro flattops. The grips are a bit small for my hands though. I prefer the Bisley grip as produced by Ruger.
