No one makes a muzzle brake that does not Break your ears. DON'T DO IT! I have had two rifles with them and will never have another, nor hunt with anyone who has one on their rifle - period.

A 270WSM is not a hard kicker to start with. If recoil is a problem, just shoot the Barnes 110gr TTSX's and they will go fast, kick very little, and do anything that a .270 anything should be asked to do better than other company's lead core 130-150 grain bullets. Easy solution to a non problem.

you know, I never hear my gun go off when I shoot a big buck. But I understand the noise factor when your practice shooting.

No brakes for me. I could see one on a big funnin' rifle like a 338Lapua, but not on a typical hunting rig.

Now with even more aplomb

People who get shot often say they couldn't feel the wound. Doesn't mean you're not gettin hurt.

not trying to talk you out of one. if you want one get one. there are a lot of people myself included NOW. that dont care for them on a hunting rifle
two years ago i was elk hunting in the flatops. i had an either sex tag and a leftover cow tag. i ran into a small herd about 150 yards away in a small clearing. i took my backpack off. laid it on top of a rock(inbetween a bunch of larger rocks) and shot two cows.
when i stood up all i could hear was a loud ringing in my ears.i couldnt hear good for days after that.
the rifle is my favoritie gun ive ever owned. its a custom ruger 338 that i had a none removeable muzzle brake put on.

Look at the Vais. It is removable with a protective thread cap. You would have a choice to use it or not. You would need to rezero if you add it or remove it. Best of both worlds.

p.s. Always use ear protection !

Karl at kampfeldcustom.com made 1 for the 25-06AI he built for me last year. It's great,it has 17degree holes drilled in it.It pulls the rifle off of your shoulder.I don't listen to all these other guys,I have 12 rifles and all have Gentry or Karls breaks on them and yes I wear ear protection which you should do anytime you shoot. My arthritic shoulder thanks me every time I go hunting or shooting a shotgun.

slg-

I'm assuming that because you're building, you're putting the metal in a quality stock with correct LOP - as you're likely aware, that makes a HUGE difference. I don't like getting banged around any more than the next guy, but I think the 270wizzum is a puttytat to shoot. While you might not notice the noise in hunting situations, you're slowly accruing some incremental hearing loss. Still, if you think you need a brake on it, have at 'er - just please stay downwind of me at the range. smile

I don't feel recoil or hear the gunshot when hunting either, even with a 416 Rigby BUT.. I DEFINATELY heard the rifle when hunting when I had a muzzle brake. They hurt, and for a long time.
