I've seen and/or killed deer with either cartridge. None were deader than the other.

I use a handloaded 162gr for my 7mm-08..Love the load and the gun...gun is very easy to carry up and down mountains and through thick brush as it is one of the lightest guns ive ever carried...Have only ever lost 1 deer with it and that was due to making a shot through thick brush...all the other ones dropped right on the spot or ran a very short distance if that.

Years ago, I shot metalic targets out to 550 yards. 7/08 had a lot less bullet drop and wind drift. 7/08's became the rage! Now the 260's are kicking butt!

RemShooter, I don't think you can go wrong either way, but I'd tend to go towards the .308 for a number of reasons, the most important being that you already have a .308 caliber supply of bullets (this will be cheaper in the long run and will make up for the $200 after a few years). +1 I made it just past page 1 and can already tell where this thread is going....I have 2 favorite cartridges. .270 Winchester & .300 Savage. If I could have every firearm in either I would. I have more .30 caliber firearms than anything. You can find .308 on a door step in many small towns. Surplus. Any Gun Shop has it. If you already reload, then why 7mm-08? Perhaps, you want something different. I did. I just got my first 7mm-08 yesterday. It's a tool that I feel in the firearm I chose (Rem. Model 7 18 1/2") is better than .308. My choice. By the way, Just picked up my first 7mm-08 yesterday.

I have both. The 308 will kill a deer! The 7mm-08 will kill a deer! I hope this helps!

Kinda like which is better, the .270 or the .280. toss a coin, you always win.

If i was to buy the gun today it would be the 7mm08. Why, because 308 shells seem to be nonexsisting around here,7mm08 can still be found.Other than that i don't much of a difference between the two.

The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.
