+1 on the Sako and plus 1 on the .260. This is my third .260 (Sako Model 75 Finnlight) and I love it. That being said, I love my Kimber 7mm-08. I sold my Weatherby .308 Carbine. It was a great shooter, but didn't fit me right.

To opine on the original questions put forth; buy the 7mm-08 and forget the rest. As we all know, bullet placement is the key, everything else is way back.

Both are great cartridges and there isn't much you can do with one you cna't do with the other.

I would tend to favor the 7mm-08 because of the cost.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Having extentsive use with both the 30-06 and 7-08 on deer this is a no-brainer IMO..

The 7mm-08 has done everything and more than the 30-06 dose on deer.. After years of use with each, the 7mm-08 is overkill when deer are concerned. It dispatches big bucks with ease.

"Dose more"!?!

Yep, I've more one shot kills and fewer feet of tracking with the -08.. Also dose more with alot less recoil and it comes in sweet lightweight packages.

Never shot anything but 140 partitions. I'm very interested in seeing what the 120tsx and the 150E-tip will do in the 7mm-08. At this point the 7mm-08 has absolutly been flawless.

As far as the 30-06 comparison goes, I'm sure the 308 can also match the -06 when talking deer. Either way the 7mm-08 dose anything they can do with less recoil.

It's been the greatest deer killer I've seen yet. I'd take one over any 270,-06, 7mm mag, 30-06, 300wm, anyday of the week!!!

My own 308 Win, 180 NP handloads go 2,665 fps and run below 3/4". A 7-08 will run a 160 NP around 2,650... as Mark remarked, there's nothing one does the other can't do equally well.

I've used the Fed HE in three or four 308's and the velocity was as advertised (~2,740) but the accuracy was about the same as your experience. As an aside, the HE velocity is approachable with a few powders I've tried (Big Game and VV N550 for example) in pressure tested loads.

I don't think I've ever posted specific data, but here's an example:

48.0 N550, Rem case, CCI 200, 180 Sierra GK, 2741 fps, 54.3K

From the same rifle, with the same pressure testing unit, Winchester factory 180 Powerpoint did ~ 2630 @ 58.3K and Speer's RL15 book load did 2644 @ 57.4K, so the load appears to be perfectly safe in this rifle. I've also used a similar load with other bullets, cases, etc. in various rifles (with and without pressure sensing unit) and it always seems to be safe with velocities generally over 2,700 fps.

Big Game took a little more powder to reach this velocity and pressures were in the 60K-65K range, so I'll forego posting those, though I think they're about as safe as what a lot of guys load.

N550... had heard the above might be possible. Very interesting!

My load of 45.0 gr's RL15/WW Brass/Fed 210/Nosler 180 goes 2,665 from a 22" barrel and goes sub moa.

Barrel length for your loads????????????????

Gman, you using a pressure trace type system?

Last time I had a 308 I vowed I'd give VV n550 a whirl.

Tomorrow I'll make the rounds to see if I can scrounge up a pound or two. laugh

Thanks for the reminder to do so!

For conversation a SAAMI 22" 7-08 1-9" tube will reilably do 2700fps with the 162A-Max.

Such things,reliably fold 308Win sails,if only obviously.

I'll spell it out for those from Montana and the like: 2700fps + .625BC + 22 inch barrel = 308 pipe DREAMS.

Amusing to read one that can't even use "conceptual" correctly in a sentence lecture me...
