Curly - that sounds like a nice rifle.

I have a similar one to that (not quite as nice) I will sell if anyone is interested - don't mean to hijack the thread

Like new LH Model 70 Sporter

Mark did the following:
Williams extractor.
trigger job/pinned+polished+smoothed 3 lbs
safety timed
red decellerator pad
talley rings/bases

Love the gun and it shoots well. I will try to get some pictures tonight.

As for the stock, I took it to an antique furniture restoration company and they dropped it in a vat of unknown chemicals. If you think of the older furniture with the browns and reds, that have bled off over time into the vat, you can get an idea of what the stock looked like coming out of the vat. The also precluded any sanding! It did also remove the hot glue bedding from the factory which was to my advantage for Mark rebedding with the pillars.

I then started with Tru-Oil and applied as directed. Then over the last 6 months, I applied a bi-weekly application of Howards Wax-n-Feed. Unlike the directions on the bottle, I put it on and wipe it off a couple of days later. Then the gun is left in my safe to "cure" for a week or so. I have DampRid in the safe, and that assists in the removal of the moisture.

The DampRid is there because I live close to the bay, and the air is very salty.

I have taken photos of the rifle. Not the best, but you can see the overall look of the rifle. From a distance it looks like any other Model 70. Up close, you can see the attention to detail from Mark.

The photo of the bottom metal is the best at reflecting how the entire rifle's metal work looks. This includes the Talley rings and bases. I will bow to Ngrumba's photo ability. The velvet finish shown on his M70 is the same as on mine. I do however have the standard rear tang. If I decide to upgrade the stock some day in the future, I would absolutely go with the scalloped rear tang.

I forgot to mention that the rifle was recrowned, the grip cap was replaced with a Super Grade cap finished to match, and the markings on the rifle were leveled prior to the velvet finish.

On the original 64's the lettering did not have the bulge around each letter as it was pressed into the metal. I assume they were polished down prior to the final finish. Mark did this for me also. I believe on a prior issue of one of the rifle magazines that had the new vs. Pre64 article, their photo clearly showed the difference in the lettering.

I think the last thing I would consider doing is having the checkering recut, and depending on the cost, adding an ebony fore end tip. Just not sure if the black tip takes away from the Pre64 concept.

Other than that, it is as close to a Pre64 as I can think of.

Hope I'm not too late with this; but many moons ago I had Mark install his most sawwweeett triggers and inletted safeties on two Ruger#1s. You can't get better than what mark did. Flawless comes to mind. One is a 17/222mag that shoots 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards ! I'm very sure that trigger has a lot to do with it. Charles
