I have made action wrenches for bolt actions.

Is there a design for a 99 action wrench out there?

I use an 8x Cresent Wrench, its about 3' long, with a piece of brass shim material between the jaws of the wrench and that sides of the action whenever I want to remove a barrel from a Savage 1899/99.

Crescent wrench and Savage 99.. Jeff, I like ya buddy, but for most folks those things should never go together.

Clarkma, what're ya planning on doing with that Savage?

Most folks can't find their collective azzes with a mapquest guide or On-Star, so what would you expect? With a different piece of brass to protect the action from steel to steel contact, the same BFW also works well on Marlin 336 actions.

WD40 to get things to move that don't.
Duct tape to keep things from moving that do.
A BFW to get thing where you want them.
And a BFHammer for all the rest.

If you add a little rosin and a 6' cheater bar, there isn't much that a determined person can't twist off with a BFW!

I bought the adjustable [Crescent type] wrench set from Harbor Freight

I put a 20" Shilen select match 6mmPPC benchrest take off barrel on a 1917 Sav 99 250S take down. I reamed out the chamber to 6mmBR.

The 24" wrench worked well.

I had to drill and tap the $175 gray rat made in 1917, using factory drilled and tapped Sav99 as template.
I have to shoot it single shot. It is like a falling block action.

It shoots better than I can with an 8 pound trigger.

You've never been around a production shop. This combination wrench will handle many things, certain rifle actions included.

Would that be a Metric, Standard, or Whitworth crescent wrench?

I believe it's of the Persuader line.

Would you use a left handed one to take the barrel off and a right handed one to put it back on, or could you just turn the wrench upside down and use it either way?

Thanks for the update.

Gratifying groups for you I am sure. Do you shoot without the fore end wood attached? I suspect so because the bull barrel would leave you with a very slim splinter fore end once you hogged out the barrel channel.

But it would look cool if the fore end were there and I doubt there would be enough wood there to put any significant external stress on the bull barrel to affect accuracy.

I was wondering if you were able to modify or fabricate a magazine rotor to feed the 6mmBR round. I guess that is your next project.

If the 8# trigger is due to a over-powered trigger return spring, a few flat washers placed underneath the trigger return spring will reduce the pull weight a bit.

I looked at the Sav99 rotor and gave up on getting 6mmBR to feed.

The $175 1917 take down 250 Sav has an extra barrel now in 6mmBR.
The original skinny barrel fits with the fore end, but the bull barrel does not. The original barrel is shot out and coroded. I may buy a skinny barrel blank and mill a dovetail cut in it to fit the fore end.

I bought another Sav99 to rebarrel, a Sav99C 308 with detachable magazine for $350.
This rifle has a like new bore, but the bore was of poor quality originally from the factory.
I prefer to work with stress relieved and factory lapped barrels.

The mill work on the breech of a barrel blank to get it to fit on a Sav99 is elaborate. Real gunsmiths may be able to do it quickly, but each cut takes me hours.

You're right, I haven't been. And for qualified folks it doesn't even phase me. But you have no idea how many 99's I've seen with wrench marks on the barrel and even receiver. Bubba's shouldn't be allowed tools and firearms at the same time.
