Guys:

Our servers are smoking hot, way overkill. If the Campfire is loading slowly for you, these are the most probable causes and solutions:

First:

1] Check that your registered email is valid, in case I need to send you a password.

2] NOTE YOUR PASSWORD ANYWAY, you'll need it to login again once you run the Windows cleaner, and download and run this Windows cleaner:

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

The free version is all you need.

Then, check your java status, and get the updated Java in the provided links:

http://www.java.com/en/

Click "Do I have Java"

Then, if not the latest version, follow the prompt.

Reboot your PC, login to the Campfire, and see what she'll do.

Finally, just for giggles, look on the bottom of the page, and check the generation times. Mine says:

"Generated in 0.021 seconds in which 0.006 seconds were spent on a total of 9 queries. Zlib compression disabled."

It will probably be one of these two things ... Windows/cookies issues or Java.

That said I haven't had any issues of late. Then again I don't surf as much as I used to - probably don't pick up as much "mess" to slow the puter down.

Cleaned with CCleaner, then installed Java update.
This nuts puter still took several minutes to open, then log on to campfire using Internet Explorer.
If I use Google Chrome 24 hour loads as fast as any forum I have ever visited.
So, I reckon it'll be a chrome experience from now on.

Firefox won't download completely or correctly onto this PC.
I have tried several times.
Chrome is fast, loaded easy, and works great.
Couldn't open Rocky Raab's web site with Explorer. It opens fine with Google Chorme.
Chrome it is!

All of what I wrote above took well over ten minutes or more with explorer. In Chrome I have opened, logged on, and now edited in about a minute.

Thanks for the link to the cleaner, I am sure this old PC needed it.

Something screwy there. Exploder is bad, but not THAT bad. And the hang up downloading Mozilla is worrisome.

Methinks your PC is sick. Time to start looking for virus/trojan horse, malware, etc.

RAM is good.

It's by far the MOST bang for your buck in terms of upgrading hardware.

Thanks Rick! Now I can post even more.

Just kidding.

Malware is from hell. A cleanup fixed what ailed my machine. What I would get, here on the 'fire, was a grey screen o' doom that would just hang there until I hit "refresh".

Rick, even after our bit of conversation, and this thread, I was still unable to get on the 'fire with any regularity.

One thing I tried, and it seems to help, is I re connected the ethernet cable from the wireless modem, and disconnected from the wireless.

Rick - I have followed your information but have reached a point where the program is asking for money. In your early comments you said the free version is sufficient. The program apparently found a lot of items requiring fixing. Does this have anything to do with the results I'm getting?

Be aware that Chrome reports all your internet activity so that Google can serve you up ads related to your interest.

Use Firefox and the add in CustomizeGoogle (I posted on this combo earlier today, so a search should find it).

This combo stops Google from building up a profile on what your search for, the websites you visit, etc.

Still, Chrome is a magnitude of order better than Internet Explorer!

Rick Bin - if you are out there could you please respond to my query of May 31. I've got some of the "error fix" program into my computer but am at a point where things are going slower than ever because I haven't been able to take the clean up to the end without paying. Was there something wrong with your original information?

have any of you tried Safari on a Windows XP machine? Or should I try something else. Internet Explorer is a real drag...

I have. It was nothing special and inexplicably slow on a few sites.

A good question indeed.

However, regarding Chrome: it transmits all the websites you visit to Google so that the Google adservers can put up ads tailored to your interests. Yes, that is right... and this info was in the legal stuff you clicked on to agree to when you installed Chrome -- but did not read like everybody else! smile

Use Firefox for even faster performance and better privacy.

I was going to load the CCLeaner but a warning popped up so I backed off. I don't think anything can help my dial-up but 60 gr of H4831SC and a 130gr Partition 2 100 yards.
I wonder if all the ad pop ups slow me down?

After following Ricks advice with the CCleaner and Java, for us Internet Explorer users I would add one more sugestion.
That is to upgrad to Explorer 8.
I have true high speed now.

OK, I loaded CC cleaner, updated JAVA and did all of the other stuff including changed my baseline system to Mozilla Firefox BUT.... I STILL get page error most of the time when I try to log on. The message is an exclamation point with "The page was re set while loading, try again. I try.... and try..... and try..... and I only get on here very occasionally. VERY frustrating. Rick, if you or anyone else here knows what I should do about this, please e-mail me with the answer to: kritterluverslive.com

A reply here may do me no good as I was unable to get here at all for several days and last night I got in one post before the 'server busy - page was re set' message came back up and kept me off all night and this morning until just now. HELP!!!!!!

This is the only website I consistently have problems with. I haven't made any of the changes and really don't intend to. It is NOT my systemm or computer or software as it is doing the same thing on any of three machines I use. A dell desktop running XP a Compaq Laptop running Vista and this Netbook running XP.My service is thru cox cable. I have difficulty loading most of the time when I have trouble. I get the message 'Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage'. The other problem is navigating within when I finally DO log on. You hit the return and it just freeezes. Enjoy participating when I can but it is definitely becoming one of my less preferred sites because of these problems. Itis the ONLY site I experience these difficulties with.

Hate to be a gadfly but designing a website that doesn't work with Explorer is a really bad idea.

Explorer has about a 75% share of the market.

I used to do this for a living and I know what I am talking about. Cleaning caches and other ways of optimizing your browser isn't going to correct poor web protocols.

This board is based on a system [UBB] that has a record of trouble going back many years.

My fear is that this great group of people are going to eventually tire of the site not loading correctly or whatever the problem is.

this is, without a doubt, the slowest loading, most troublesome web site i visit (or try to visit) daily. i use windows xp, explorer, kaspersky, java, and others, along with high speed sat. feed, and rarely have speed issues on the other gun/hunting-related sites. i'll keep trying because i enjoy this site.

I have a brand new computer, new software, IE8. the works. All other web sites load in a flash. This is the only website I visit that is slow. Usually at least 30 seconds to load and then the same when moving from page to page. also the only web site that I frequent that requires Adobe Flash Player and Java.I belive they are only required for all the advertisements

Security settings at work coupled with the ever-increasing amount of ads/script running on the 'fire have made it impossible/unbearable to view the forum during downtime at work. Maybe that is a good thing for work . . . but I don't think it's a good thing for the forum.

use to be my favorite site..now getting sick of even tring to get here let alone go through it...what a shame...someone here knows why this is an issue and I suspect it has to do with greed or ignorance, but then again, I am ignorant and frustrated with using the internet in general...bottom line is this isn't near as fun as it use to be..i am not going to try to read all the bs needed to make this site work for me anymore because I do not want to spent over an hour waiting to read each suggestion inbetween clicks to straighten this joke out..i suggest if you want long time users to keep coming back, you personally pm us so we can get the fix within only 15 minutes...pissed in Colorado, "elk"

I'm pretty sure you can download and install Firefox and the Adblock add-on in 15 minutes. Hopefully that wasn't too much bs for you to read.

I too was having lots of trouble with this site and just added the AdBlock extension to my browser (Google Chrome) and problem solved! Here is a link to their site (https://getadblock.com). I even ended up sending them $5, they ask for users to determine what they want to pay.

I hope this helps.

This is really great info.

I was very troubled about the slowness, and deterioration, of navigating the website hunting forums. It became impossible to log on the the past couple of days.

I have a very fast computer only a couple of years old and i use windows 8.1.

I also hire Guruaid and pay them a handsome sum annually for trouble shooting and cleanup. I phoned them yesterday and explained the problem which was that I could go to other websites and all was just fine. They said it was a local site problem and they couldn't help.

So the plot thickens !? I could navigate everywhere on 24 hour campfire just fine, fast and effortless EXCEPT the hunting forums.

I plundered around on my own trying several things: Norton Scan, deleted some stuff, to no avail. In frustration I downloaded Firefox. They noted that I was an old customer, welcomed me back, installed and updated. I then opened 24 Hour Campfire in Firefox and logged on in a flash ! Navigated all over the forum quickly and easily !!!!!!???????

I have no idea what occurred but it worked. I'm calling special attention to the above poster who mentioned Firefox/Google Chrome - Spot on.

It's a bit early yet for me to go back and evaluate any improvements in Internet Explorer, MSN, my browsed of choice but I will follow up.

I've been at this computer thing since it's original introduction and seen and experienced everything and one thing i can count on is the mysteries. There are so many elements, hackers, updated, vagaries, gremlins, glitches.

I have at least 4 four matters unresolved that I can't get answers to or solutions. And I suspect that I probably never will. Fortunately these are very peripheral and don't affect my regular use.

Guys N Gals:

Further update:

I spoke to supposed MSN who actually are a cagey, spinoff apparently, who pretend to be MSN but are in reality some glom on parasites that want to sell services. Before they put the bight on me for big dollar annual contract services I was able to ascertain that they say the problem is hackers from Mexico. They showed a whole plethora of very extensive hackers which was long. But I don't bite on that.

I'll keep om trying to get to the bottom, but in the interim what works is going to another browser Firefox or Chrome for the minute.

I don't mind having ads along the sides of the screen, after all somebody has to pay to keep up the site. I make a point of clicking on any ad that I find remotely interesting.

However, the ads here are out of hand. Ads that contain videos are OK, but ads that start videos with sound without me starting them are unacceptable. Worse still are ads that start themselves that I can't shut off. Worst of all, lately ads have been running scripts that consume huge chunks of CPU time, keep the editor from working and/or crash the browser.

Enough. It's time to exercise some control over what the ads on this site can do.

This is the only site I visit that has these problems.

UH OH! Now what? I'm running Ubuntu on a lap top. I've had trouble with my shockwave crashing, and the screens freezing in a white background, but only on the "campfire". Kinda frustrating. I'm thinking the live banners are part of the shockwave issue. Not sure about the freezing.
