I just picked up a Sako Grey Wolf (85 stainless w/laminated stock) in 338 Federal and need to get ready to mount a scope on it. The scope I have is a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10 44 MC.
Scope Spec: Effective Lens Diameter 44 mm Exit Pupil Diameter 12.6-4.4 mm Diopter Range +2/-3 dpt Eye Relief 3.5 in Square Adjustment Range (in/100 yds) 64.9 Adjustment per Click (in/100 yds) 1/4 Center Tube Diameter 1 in Eye Piece Tube Diameter 41 mm Objective Tube Diameter 50 mm Length 12.7 in Weight 15.87 oz
I plan on going optilock and have decided the LOW 1" SS rings should be about right. What I cant figure out is which length of mount base to get. They come in "Regular" "Long" and "Extended" but I have no idea what I should choose.
Any help would be great. Just ordered the rifle today!
Thanks, Kevin

I have the same scope on my S/S 85 300WSM, also have low rings and the short action bases. Works out pretty well.

The short action bases position the front ring on the forward end of the base, this spaces the two rings further apart. The long action bases would only be necessary if you had a mag action and a short scope. You definitely want the short action bases for your 338 Federal.

Randy, as far as the mounts go, the OL's seem to be a solid setup. The plastic inserts are a pretty nifty deal.

You're welcome Kevin.
Some guys have had trouble with the screw heads stripping out so just be sure to use a tight fitting allen wrench and snug each ring screw evenly while alternating.
I bet you'll like the 85. Did Sako discontinue the 338 Fed? There were some really good deals on Gunbroker awhile back.

Why not get the Optilock ring mounts? The Sako 85 has an integral mounting system that does not require bases...no need for the extra weight/extra parts...the ring mounts do it all.
They are what I will be using on my Sako 85 Grey Wolf in .338 Federal to hold the Zeiss Conquest 2.5-8x32.

What could be a sadder way to end a life than to die having never hunted with great dogs, good friends and your family?

As mentioned, Sako Optilock bases and Low mount rings, or the new style Optilock RINGMOUNTS in low.
I have either of the 2 setups on all my Sako m75 and Tikka T3 rifles-with Leupold VX2/VX3 40mm scopes-lots of room for a 44mm.

Thanks all!
Yeah they discontinued the 338 Federal so I've heard. Picked the rifle up brand new for $725. Can't beat that!
