I just want a decent M-1 or two to play with that may also be a reasonable investment. I think it would be great fun to shoot at the range for my 10 yr. old. And if the chinese invade...well, I'll just have to be handicapped with this round and just use my 300 wsm for back up laugh

Put a 4X scope on mine and it was a waste of glass. replaced it with a red dot scope and it became a really fast handling little carbine and a lot of fun.

I mentioned somewhere earlier that my wife's older Brother gave her a sweet little Quality Hardware .30 M1 Carbine recently.

The purpose is for her to have a bedside gun that is effective, handy, and easy for her to use, when I am out of town.

With proper ammunition, such as Remington 110 grain SP, it will do that job well.

Free was a good price laugh

Mannlicher,

I always thought that an M1 carbine properly loaded would make a fine home defense gun. Nice pic.

That's a great looking carbine. Pity the fool that breaks in on the little lady.

I added an Ultimak rail to replace the front handguard. Added an Aimpoint to the rail and there it was. The perfect little home defense rifle. I even have a bayonet for it if things really get up close and personal!! grin

The M1 carbine makes a very good choice for home defense. I have one handy for just such purpose, complete with a fully stocked 30 round mag.

It is generally considered marginal for deer. It will work, but don't expect it to do much, and you'd better be within 100 yards when you pull the trigger. It hates cold weather. Ask some Vets who carried it. Seemed fine in WWII in the hot humid islands. In Korea, cold weather caused jams.

The best thing about the M1 carbine is that it is great fun to shoot.

I also have an Ultimak equiped M1. It has been very stable and reliable. No change in POI despite hard use. One carbine course was three days and one night using over 1000 rds. One of the most reliable guns used in the course. Mine has a Leupie Scout Scope on it. Some stock inletting is required for mounting the Ultimak. CorBon makes a DPX load for it. Remington and Winchester make very good defense ammo as well.
