Anybody-How much length will I lose if I take a thread off of a 722 factory contour barrel and rechambering to same caliber.(257AI)When I was young I had mine throated to 3.10 not thinking the magazine length was only 2.80+/-.I want to cut one thead off and just have it rechambered w/no throating since it already has a long one. It's been a two shooter ever since.Anybody out there help me?It is a 257AI. thanks powdr

You won't lose enough to hardly change the original barrel length. You may have to take more than one thread to Aline the factory stamping on the barrel but still very little.

If you have a throat cut for a 3.10" OAL cartridge and you're wanting the throating to be right for a 2.80" OAL cartridge, wouldn't you need to cut the barrel back 0.30"+/-? If so that would be either 4 or 5 threads, rather than just 1 thread?

The biggest PITA in setting back most Remington 722 barrels is having to re-inlet the stock for the rear sight boss. I know this x2, a 257 barrel rechambered to 25-284 and a 222 barrel rechambered to 22-250. I ended up installing the barreled actions in 700 ADL stocks and sold the 722 stocks in their original barrel channel configurations to cover part of the cost.

In lieu of having the barrel set back and the chamber recut, have you considered having your 'smith install a longer Wyatt magazine box?

Powdr,

As was mentioned, the thread per inch on the Rem barrel is 16 TPI. To determine how much the barrel moves per turn, simply divide 1 by 16 and you get .0625. The barrel moves 1/16 in. per turn, or, per thread.

If you had to close a distance of .300, you would divide the .300 by .0625 which would equal 4.8 threads.

I am assuming that the Remington 722 barrel in question has a rear sight boss and a ramp front sight. If so, wouldn't you usually trim a barrel with open sights so that they will come back to 12 o'clock? If so, wouldn't you need to shorten the barrel in 1/16"/full threads incriments, so that the barrel would rotate a full 360-degrees for each 1/16" that was removed?

The boss was taken off long ago.So were the front sights. The barrel now is 20inches long and in a Brown Precision stock. The chamber marking was buffed off years ago.My chamber opening will take a cartridge 2.92 but that stiil leaves me off the lands a good bit and no room to chase the OLD 1957 leade.Maybe it's time to just rebarrel but I'd rather try to remove a couple of threads first.Should be a simple task for anyone w/an 257AI reamer.Thanks-powdr

This may be slightly off topic, but I have heard of
gunsmiths putting 722 barrels on 721 actions. I have
never encountered one, but one told me put a .300 Savage
barrel on a 721 several years ago.

Since they have the same barrel shank and threads specs, there wouldn't be any trouble installing a 722 barrel on any 7/600/660/673/700/721/722/725 or 40X(CF) action.
