Thanks for your replies guys. JOG doesn't want a .300-he wants .308 because he just likes that round better, and also because he has a beautiful .308 barrel courtesy of VAnimrod that will grace a Mauser action some day in the not too distant future. We will be looking strictly for a shooter-so drilled holes and recoil pads won't be much of an issue, although we will try to avoid any cracked stocks if possible. Maybe we'll get lucky and just find a grey rat with a good barrel that needs some TLC. With his gunsmithing aspirations after graduation next year, it would make a good class project for him. The boy is learning, I see. BTW - I still have my eyes and ears out for a good donor large-ring 98 action. It'll be found...........

If it's $450 for a 99F in 308 with a serial number under 1 million and it's in good shape, that's a darned good bargain. Even if it's over 1 million it's priced lower than it would be around here. Thank you. I'll look into it a bit more if it's still available.

I purchased a very nice pre-mil 99F in .308 for my hunting partner last year for $525. They are out there, although I haven't seen many lately.
By the way, he says the recoil on the rifle is quite mild.

Don't turn your back on one with a recoil pad, especially the F. The F is a kicky little devil in .308. Not one you want to shoot on the bench a lot. Hunting is of course a different matter - who feels recoil then? That is the Only reason on the F in 308! Kicky-like a mule Other than that it's an o.k. gun,,i prefer a 300 or a 243. or 250 in a F. I'll take a E.G. or R any day in a 308 I shall never forget two things about my new 99F 308. I got it as a 12 year old in 1960 and could not wait to shoot it. I will never forget the first three (and the last three) shots without a recoil pad. The second thing is how much better the first three shots with the recoil pad felt. Turned it into a gun I could shoot.
