I chronographed that same load in my Featherweight .30/06 and it does 2560fps which is a lot less than others have stated. By contrast, when I load 57gn of H 414, I get 2733fps with easy extraction and good accuracy.

Is that load over listed max or compressed? Just curious as I'm thinking of getting some H414.

I develop my own loads, I do not use reloading manuals becuase of their custom barrels and tight chambers. After spending so many years reviewing rifles and cartridges, I have not seen a manual that was as close to reality as the Hornady Volume 2.

The other thing is that many loads I developed are for cartridges with limited or no data so I have always travelled my own road.

+1 on that load ,I use that one and works well
why no others listed it,who knows but it shoots good.

I believe there is a balance point where a bore/caliber/bullet weight range and construction balanced to the impact velocity tends to generate a spread of effectivness.

That is the reason why a reader may quote a mild 57gn 4350 (any) with either 165gn or 180 gn and all will be happy with the effectiveness noted. Another hunter may load up to 61 grains in some rifles for more velocity.

I find this is relative to the usual use for shooting 150-400 pound animals where all are adequate which is why the reputation is there.

This same ballistic phenomenon is noted with the .375 H&H whereby many users shoot a given load at 200-800 pound animals and the balance of caliber/bullet and velocity is again in very comfortable territory.

Where the .30/06 shines is the ability to shoot flat with say 130-150gn bullets and take small antelope/pronghorn/deer with ease and then when loaded with heavier 200-240gn premium bullets seems to be just as reliable on animals very much larger, just as the .375 is, again, with heavy for caliber bullets on game considerably larger than plains game.

What is missing from this equasion is shootability and that is the most key of factors as after the bullet/caliber/velocity is adequate to the task, the ability of "most" people to shoot straight is the important factor that allows all the other ingredients to work their magic.

The older I get and the more memories I accumulate, the more respect and reverence I place on the .30/06. If you knew me 30 years ago, nothing that breathes coudl sell me one. Today, the sale is made and the magnums are fading from the rack.

I personnaly like Hornady 180gn BT loaded over 60gn of IMR or H 4350 for velocities around 2820-2850fps. It is very effective and that is an understatement. This load will shoot "very" sub MOA in my favourite .30/06 Featherweight.

I should use it more often.

John

I think that one came from me.... out of 4 different brands of 06s, with barrel lengths from 22 to 26 inch... mine all chronographed over 2900 fps..

that is quite a major difference in results..

however on H 414.. I have almost nothing but good luck with that powder in a variety of cartridges..

52 grains Varget with 150 grain Accubond, (CCI 200 primers, RP Brass 3.275 OAL. 3 shot groups consistently range between 0.8 and 1.1 inch at 100 meters (based on 11 3-shot groups shot on different days). 2700 fps from my Remington 7600 Carbine (18.5 inch bbl).

Here's a groundbreaking load (smile). 57 grains IMR 4350, 165 grain hornady BTSP, CCI 200 primers, RP brass, OAL 3.29 inches. 2600 FPS. 3 shot groups around 1 inch. Increasing to 58 grains runs around 2650 FPS with groups in the 1-1.25 inch range. Remington 7600 Carbine.

This gun and these loads are not barn-burners but will do the trick on anything here in eastern Canada.

Absolutely, a classic 30-06 load that has worked for me as well!

Another great load is 58.0 grains of IMR-4350 with a 165 Bullet of your choice. Sierra, Hornady, Nosler, Barnes, Speer...

This is the exact same load I just shot in my Vanguard SubMOA, except brass was W-W. Shot a 1.16" 3 shot group.

180 gr partition, 58 gr Ramshot Hunter, W-W brass, WLR primer. This gave 3-shot 100 yd groups under 1" in 4 different .30-06 rifles.

47.5 grs IMR 4064 with Hornady 180 grain SP.

It's only a name. It could just as easily have been Nosler Partition.

I have mostly used 56 grains of IMR-4831 powder using a 165 grain bullet. Velocity for this load according my Chrony was 2775fps.

I also used 56 grains of IMR-4350 powder for a Velocity of 2800-fps, with a 180 grain bullet.

Agree on the IM4350. If it won't shoot well with 57-58gr and a 165 it won't shoot

Hello Everyone,

I'm brand spanking new to reloading, just bought RCBS reloading kit which came with Speer's latest edition reloading book. I've also got Hodgon's 2009 Annual Reloading Magazine. I also bought Nosler's latest reloading book as well.

Where are you guys finding your load data for 180-grain bullets at 2800fps? The manuals I'm looking at only list around 2700fps for 180-grain load in the 30-06.

Thanks!

Stick with the reloading manuals data. See what it does for ya, with a chrony.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Yep, and some of the older manuals listed loads that today's manuals (with lawyered up loads) consider too hot. As a Newb, stick with the data in the manuals, and slowly work towards the higher loads.

Best wiishes in an exciting sport, and remember, if you want 300 magnum ballistics -- buy a 300 magnum, and don't hot load the 30-06 to that level. wink

Thanks raybass and the_shootist! Any suggestion as to what chrony to buy? Hoping to stay under $200 if possible as funds got tapped buying all the reloading equipment to get set-up/started.

The F1 Chrony is under $100 and the Pro Chrono is about $125. I have an F1 and a friend bought the Pro Chrono. We tested them side by side and the results were within 5-10 fps.
