I have three different Remington SA Model 700/722's in 257 Roberts, and shoot the 87 grain bullets in each of them. The loads vary, and here are the ones that work in my rifles: 44.5 grains of IMR-4350 38.0 grains of Varget 40.0-42.0 grains of RL-15, depending on rifle. I don't chronograph loads so I don't know what the velocities are.

Rich you got your GA hunting license yet? Its funny they just have a piece of ink jet paper that you cut the license out of! I cannot believe how bad off most state government finances are. Not 87's but I am shooting 100 TSX's over 46.5 grains of H4350 out of a 22 inch Kimber. No clue as to how fast they are going. Sam O has a chronagraph but he shoots 100's or maybe it was 110's at I think right at 3000 in the same gun.

Rich:My old favorite was a max charge of IMR4831 with 87 gr bullet from a Ruger M77 with 22" barrel.Velocity was about 3300 fps.
I won't quote the load because I do not remember it precisely. But back then I do remember being surprised that IMR4831 did as well as it did in velocity and accuracy with the 87 gr bullet. It impressed on me that the Roberts actually does better with slower powders than we would think.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Custom Mauser 22 in. barrel 43.5 RL15, 87 Sierra, 3269 fps, one more grain of powder gave hard bolt lift. Ruger #1B 26 in barrel 42.5 RL15, 87 Sierra, 3358 fps. One more grain to hot for that rifle. Ruger Ultralite 20 in. barrel 42.0 RL15 87 Sierra, 3182 fps. Most accurate load in this rifle with that combination. Ruger Ultralite, 20 in. barrel 45.0 IMR 4007SSC, 85 Nosler, 3109 fps. So so accuracy. Custom Mauser 22 in. barrel, 46.0 IMR 4007SSC, 85 Nosler, 3223 fps. Poor accuracy. Still working with the 4007 powder but so far a good accurate load has eluded me.

I started with H-4895 and had no luch=k with good accuracy. I then tried IMR-4831 and all the loads I tried shot well. I settled for 51.0 grs. of IMR 4831 using the 87 Gr. Sieera Vaminter bullet sitting .010 from the lands. I had an average velocity of 3091 FPS. The rifle is a Rouger Hawkeye with a 22" barrel. I had 2 groups with this load, 1 shot .779 and the other .885 for 3 shots!
