Just curious what powder you use to get that velocity.

Why not the wsm or saum?

I already have a FN SPR .534 bolt face in 300 WSM with a Rock
M24/40 contour 26" A3 stock. Weighs 14 to 15 lbs with scope.

I wanted a .473 bolt face round and bought another FN SPR action from David Walter. I still may go 260 Rem as I wanted a mild recoiling shooter. That would be plenty for deer.

If I were to re-barrel the .534 face I would probably go
7 saum and neck down Norma 300 saum brass.

I've always been a Rem action fan but these SPR'S are working out great. They come trued up from the factory.

SU35,

I'll be waiting and watching for your new rig and results. Then I'll build one too with any needed improvements! wink

Seriously, it already sounds like a winner to me!

SU35, can you buy the actions seperate? If so, from where? Cost? Lastly, do most stock makers make stocks/inletting for those actions?

Yes, CDNN had them for sale, and still do?
You would have to check them out.

I bought my first FN SPR action from them direct then bought the next one from a member here.

I wanted actions with a floor plate not the DM though that works fine for some.

They are a Win 70 action and Mcmillan and Manners inlet for them.
I'm sure the others do as well.

The actions make for a nice inexpensive build.

This is what they look like.

Some have cashed in and bought multiple actions then sell them on these auction sites.
They can be had for cheaper.

Bob,

Here's one that I had put together by H-S Precision (I've since sold it). Made it up specifically for LR shooting in SE Idaho.......6-700 yards shot common, little to no chance to get closer; shoot or pass.

Finished weight all up, empty, 9.35#, 300 Win, long throated with long magazine. Not real easy to tote, but doable.

Mod 70 Classic action
H-S Stainless cut rifled barrel,.750" muzzle, Rem Countour
H-S Stock, bedded by them
Leupold 3.5x10 Mil-dot scope with turrets
Conetrol mounts

165 grainers at 3375 FPS, one big ragged hole.

MM that is a very cool rifle! I like the tool for the application.

You just pictured something I had in mind to build and am building.

Thanks, I'm not crazy after all or at least not the only one who is. grin

Just got a rock 284 sendero fluted barrel. Its gonna be a 280ai set up for the 162amax and maybe the 160 accubond. I'll probably give some bbergers a whirl too.

Trying to decide what length to go and am waffling between an A3 or an A5. Have you tried an A5 to compare to your A3?

Long throated with a magazine to match, so the bullets are seated to the base of the neck, essentially, 300 Wby. equivalent.

Heavy doses of RL-22.

SU35,

Just to give you a point of reference...

I just picked up a Rock light palma barrel in 6.5 this week. Just for grins, I was comparing this barrel to Krieger's profiles, and it came in at a medium Palma on their chart.

None the less, mine threaded for a long action 700, chambered in 6.5-284, and cut at 30", weighs an ounce and a half over five pounds. This is getting buttoned down in a sniper filled A-5, with one of those extra 4.5-14x40 MarkIV's on top. I wasn't going for a mountain rifle either....

aalf,

I appreciate the reference, thanks.

I will be ordering a Rock Light Palma and will probably have it fluted.

Did you have yours ordered or did you find it on the market?
Envious here... grin

I have this thing for the 6.5x284 and keep getting drawn back to it in spite of barrel life. It's just a performer.

I like your idea of the A5 and the scope. A 4.5x14 LR will be riding mine.

SU,

You could say I "found it".

Not to add to your envy, but I live less than an hour away from Rock barrels, and probably hang around them too much. Plus, I shoot Hunter competition with Paul and James.

I like the 6.5-284. I used it the first 5 years at 1000yd Benchrest. As far as barrel life, you can get at least a 1000 rounds of competitive barrel life. In a BR heavy gun class, you'll shoot from 5 to 10+ sighters and then pound out ten shots ASAP. Not real conducive to extended barrel life. In a plicking gun, you should see upper teens of good accuracy, or more. The best thing to do is just pick the bullet you wanna shoot, and use H-4831SC or R-22. If you can't get it to go with either of those, it ain't gonna go. Personally, after trying every powder on the planet workable in the 6.5, and wearing out half my first tube, I bought 48lbs. of one lot of H-4831-SC and went with it.

I went with a 30" tube cause I can get 3050 with the 140/142 bullets and not stretch primer pockets. 3100 is doable, but at the expense of pockets. If I end up thinking it's too long to pack around, I can always have it shortened. I've had 6.5-284's in barrel lengths from 18" in an X-P to 31" in my BR guns, so I kinda know what to expect in speeds.

You could always drop back one contour, skip the fluting, and bankroll the savings into the next tube. The Palma is basicly a Sendero taper with more shank.

As in Nike, just do it........
