I posted this here as it sort of a specialty long range load for you other 308 fans out there.

I'm doing some testing with this combo. So far just running up the pressure to see where indicators start to show. I ran out of room for powder before finding excess pressure, but suspect I got fairly close.

Here are some chrono results. I only shot two rounds of each charge. spreads were all within 10 fps, about half within 5 fps. Small sampling, but looks promising for consistency.

Win Brass, fireformed, neck-sized
CCI 200 primer
20.5" bbl, 1/12 twist. (Rem chamber/throat)

208 AMax (moly'd)
3.00" OAL (kissing lands)
RL-17
46 gr - 2380 fps (velocities 15 feet from muzzle)
47 gr - 2430 fps
48 gr - 2480 fps
49 gr - 2535 fps
50 gr - 2570 fps
51 gr - 2645 fps

Here's the Crash Test Dummy with some loads prepped for chrono/pressure analysis, 49-51 gr RL17.

I'm going to load up a few charged with 51gr/2650 fps and see how they look on paper and at distance. It's a single shot load for now, I'll be keeping an eye open for Glen's ADL floorplate/magazine.

Those 208's look mighty slick in those cases.

Very interesting! The Alliant site lists a max of 48.7 gr of RL 17 with the 180 gr Speer.

If your rifle can go as much 51 gr with a 208 grainer with no signs of pressure, then more power to ya!

From a 20.5" barrel, 2645 fps is extremely good for a 308 using a 208 gr bullet. Other than the RL 17, I don`t think you`ll do that well using any other powder.

I was skeptical of some of the velocity reports out there using RL-17. I believe it now.

Apparently the powder has some type of retardant impregnated in it that retards and prolongs the top of the pressure curve.

I`ve been reading all about the RL 17 for several months and finally got a hold of some. I recently duplicated a load I found on "reloadersnest" where the velocity with a 155 gr VLD using 69 gr of RL 17 was 3380 fps from the poster`s 24" barreled 300 WSM.

69 gr with the 155 VLD got me a chronyd 3234 fps from my 16.5" tubed 300 WSM compact. My previous high was 3118 fps using a 150 gr SST.

I believe it now too!

Please post the accuracy results.

I'm using the 208 AMAX and 210 VLDs in my 300 Win for hunting, may need to try some in the 308.

My loading above; 155 gr Berger VLD w/69 gr RL 17 @ 3234 fps gave me .0784" OD; 3 shot grouping.
Another loading; 210 gr Berger VLD w/66 gr RL 22 @ 2732 fps gave me 0.343" OD; 3 shot grouping.

Both of these loads I copied off of the "reloaders nest" site under 300 WSM. My results were also posted over there.

Especially when no data exits for certain bullet weight/powder combos (like the 155 gr VLD w/RL17), I prefer to let others be the guinea pigs and then I`ll copy later. I still start with lower charges and work up.

Waiting to see some RL17 loadings using the 190 and the 210 VLD.

MontanaMarine: post your load!!

Oh wait... you did. Guess some guys are credible that way. smile

Very interesting! Wonder how that stuff (RL17) would perk in a 30-06...?

Hey Shane! Good to see your latest update on the heavy-bullet .308 research! You're getting nearly as much velocity from the 208 gr bullet as I am from the traditional 168 gr bullet... Awesome!

Might be time for me to try some of that fancy new powder... But then what would I do with all the doggone Varget I've still got on hand for my 2730 fps/168 grain loads??? grin

Did some accuracy checks today with this one:

308 Win
Win brass
208 AMax, moly'd
CCI 200
3.00 OAL
51 gr RL-17
2650 fps.

I intended to go long and check some drops so I bolted on the 16X Super Sniper. Shot two groups to get a 100 yard zero. First was four shots into .65", second was three shots into .65" again.

I then went out to a 1 moa wide white rock at 1320 yards. Dialed 46 moa per Quicktarget. Wind seemed very low and almost 6 oclock so I didn't dial any wind. First round was 1 mil left. I held one mil right, and the second and third shots were hits.

I'm going to do some testing with this powder in the 30-06 one of these days. It might make a good powder/bullet to serve both the 308 and the 30-06, and simplify logistics.

A couple pics from today's test:

Rifle with the 16X Super Duper Sniper onboard. I love the rear-focus. Very easy for a southpaw to work in the prone bipod position:

51gr RL17, 10 shots, 100 yards. sunny, 85F, 5-10 full value wind, I think I jerked one out, might have been the wind.

The group started at the bottom and climbed as the barrel warmed. I sent all ten downrange in about two minutes or so.

Not horrible, the ammo is good, and the potential for better accuracy is there.

MM do you have a velocity/barrel length on this load?

Yes I've chonographed it during the workup.

It's a 20.5" barrel (factory Rem VS barrel, cut to 20.5"), 2650 fps.

All the details are in the first post of this thread.

Always impressive Shane,

I'm finding that QL and RL17 are having a disagreement with true pressures. Don't know if QL understands the powder.

The 12 twist really surprises me with a 208 VLD. I am still scratching my head over the accuracy at long range (and close range) with that twist. Don't you know the .308 is only good to 800 yards? Jeez, stop kicking against the pricks ;o) Should be a humdinger in the .30-06. It will be hard to beat the velocity you are getting though. That is amazing. My custom .30-06's with 27" barrels will get me 2,700 fps. That isn't much more than you are getting with the .308. Come on, test the .30-06...do it, do it, do it...LOL I am messing around with the 7mm-08 right now. Another AMAZING round. 162 grain AMAXES are the bullet to shoot in it ;o) Flinch

I've heard of over 2800fps with the 162, H4350, and a Wyatt's 3" mag box. That was a 25.5" barrel. I was impressed.

Yesterday I saw an add posted at the gun club. A guy was selling 5lbs of RL-17 for $93. Turns out he made a big powder order and really wanted a pound of RL-17, but they charged him for and sent him 5 lbs instead. I bought it from him, new, recent manufacture, and unopened.

I shoot a couple 30-06s and a 308, but my main motivation is for the M-70 Classic 300 WSM that's on it's way to me.

I think QL pressure calcs are a bit skewed regarding RL17. According to QL, my pressure is about 74K lbs-psi. I don't think the calc can properly interpret the retardant in this powder. Usually I will start seeing signs with other powders when pressure calc is about 65K for the velocity chronographed.

Flinch,

I'm getting 2720 fps out of the 208 in my 22.5" 30-06, via moly, 61gr RL22 and neck sized Norma brass. OAL 3.45"

Most all of the 30-06 shooters on the 'hide are getting the 208 to around 2800 fps in 26" 30-06s, via 60 or so grains of RL22, without moly.
