Hi folks!
I am a big fan of 9.3X62! Here in Europe this is a very popular rifle caliber!
I have a CZ lux in 9.3X62 and I love it!

I wish to ask what is your favorite type of bullet from Norma and RWS or else European producer?

Please for advise - if you wish to buy a semi - auto hunting rifle in this caliber, what you will choose?
Browning, Benelli, H&K or else?

the only 9.3x62 semi i have seen available in the US are Remington 7400/750 conversions done by Accuracy Systems. I load my own ammo and use 270gr speer, and will be testing various Barnes bullets soon. if I run accross some at good prices I would try Norma or Lapua offerings (I use only Lapua brass in my 9.3x62). Most European stuff is quite expensive in the US. I hear alot of guys liking the PRVI loads.....they are very affordable here.

Does Browning make a BAR in 9.3 x 62 for the European market?

There is also the SA rifle from Heckler und Koch (HK SLB) and the Argo from Benelli, all offered in European standards: 7x64 and 9.3x62.

Browning's BARs are the most popular SA rifles I've seen in Belgium.

I'll paraphrase my old shooting master, Col. Jeff Cooper (+), and say... If you MUST have a (9,3x62) semi-auto rifle, the Sauer 303 and the Benelli Argo are the most acceptable of the lot, followed, at distance, by the Browning BAR...

I've read some problem reports about the .303 from French owners. Maybe early production was needing some things to get fixed ? It's sure an attractive rifle, the only SA available with a manual cocking device.

By the way, what was the original sentence ?

That's what the old master had to say about small caliber pistols : "if you MUST carry a smallbore handgun, then go on but don't load it. For if you do, you might have to shoot somebody with it and if you do, he will get awfully mad at you..."

you've Studied Col. Cooper a lot as it seems. I really like his scout rifle concept (except for the low light applications).

I trained with Jeff Cooper during his stays in Belgium during the 70-80ies.) and was certified as "expert in defensive pistolcraft" by Cooper's API (American Pistol Institute). Thanks to his (rough) tutoring, I won the 1979 Belgian IPSC championship and placed 3rd. in the European championship. He took a liking to me as he believed I had "some potential" (coming from him, that was something to be proud of...) We stayed in touch and kept writing for some time.

A few years ago, the Man lost some of his aura in my eyes for, having him presented the "scout rifle" I had helped Daniel Dekaise develop (a K98 in .308 Win + scout scope + Ching sling and adapted to accept a M14 magazine. BTW, I also fathered the hunting variant, the "Saint-Hubert" in 9,3x62 but sans detachable mag -see pic below), Cooper barely took a look at the rifle and declined an invitation to shoot it, showing no further interest. We were dumbfounded and didn't understand until the Steyr-Mannlicher "scout" came out a few months later with lots of advertising and endorsement by Jeff...

I try Bar in 9.3X62 but I do not feel it nice - balance is worst in a front of SR1

I have a US short-trac Browning and like the ergonomics quite well, but can't speak for the balance on the long-trac model. The obvious thing to do is to handle all of the rifles that you can. Autos are problematic, and I would take any reports of unreliability very seriously. Don't forget that you can alter the balance of a rifle by adding weight to the stock if you find the rifle balances too far forward.

I have a Browning Short Trac in 308 and a Browning Safari BAR in 30-06.

The alloy Short Trac is lighter and better balanced than the all steel BAR.

Both are both very accurate,shooting groups of less than 3cm at 100 meters,very close to minute of angle.

Both have been very reliable as well,no malfunctions.

I have handled a Merkel as well as talked to a Merkel gunsmith about them. They seem to be good guns but feel and look bulkier than either Browning.

I have had accuracy issues with three different Benelli auto rifles and do not recommend them.

I have had such good results with my Sauer 202 bolt action that I would love to have their 303 auto which has the same modular design. I have never seen one in the US but would most likely own one if they were avaiable here.

If I were in Europe I'd most likely choose the Sauer.

One Benelli was enough for me! Wish Browning would offer the 9.3 x 62 in the BAR!

As stated in an earlier post, they do offer it for the European market. I'm not sure whether it's the Safari or the Long-trac.
