A friend of mine called and said he found a Savage 170 in30/30 in very good condition. He said the gun shop had $410 on it. I thought that was a bit high. What do you think? I told him what little that I knew. It was built on a shotgun action with a 20" rifle and a 18.5" carbine both in 30/30. I told him also that I thought it had been advertised in .35 Remington but that I had never seen one in that caliber. Any information would be appreciated.

Yes Sir.
About 400$ too high.

Goat, I have seen them in nice condition going from $250-$300 in the 30-30 caliber. They did make some in 35 Rem and they generally go for a bit more. Don

$410 would buy you a pretty decent hunter/shooter 99.

If he has a pump fetish it would also buy you a really nice vintage Remington model 14 or 141.

Any of the above choices would be a much better buy for the money.

Thanks for the replies! I looked at gunbroker too. I would have thought $250 for a decent one but see that they start at $300 and go up.

I wouldn't pay $300 or more for one..
the ones on gunbroker at $300 or higher, do any have bids? Might be a reason they are there.

In this area they go for around $300 in nice used condition. I like pump actions, but the 170 always feels clunky and cheap to me.

I can remember when Jim Carmichael (shooting editor for Outdoor Life)did a side-by-side accuracy test of several deer rifles back in the 1970s (including several bolt actions). Surprisingly, the Savage 170 in 30-30 came out near the top of the heap.

Got one in 35 Rem, nice brush busters.

It's wearing a Savage scope 2X with a post reticle.

The 170 sometimes develop and feeding problem, so before you BUY any of them, have them use the dummy rounds to see if all is in working order
